Subaru Impreza STI revealed? Possibly.

If Japan’s Best Car isn’t BSing everyone, the car you see in the magazine scans above is the 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI. And while it’s still a mortal lock to polarize people as much as the Impreza it’s based on, we’ll go out and say that this looks pretty killer. Sporting the expected high-mount wing, bulging fenders, quad exhaust tips, a substantial front spoiler, and a great-looking set of wheels, this is worlds better-looking than the regular WRX. From the looks of things, the car is also equipped with vented Brembos all around, which is not surprising. Where the WRX looks almost friendly, this thing’s menacing, particularly in that dark gray finish.

2008 Subaru Impreza STIAccording to the little chart shown on one of the scans, here’s some of the key info you'’ll want to know. All numbers pertain to the JDM model, obviously.

  • Engine/Transmission: EJ20 / 6MT
  • 300PS (295 hp) @ 6500 RPM
  • 45 kgm (325 lb-ft) @ 4400 RPM
  • 10.5 km/l (24.7 US MPG) in the Japanese 10-15 mode test cycle

Unfortunately, we don’t read Japanese, and that’s about all we can glean at this time. If you can read Japanese and are able to add more, feel free to do so in the comments. Now we want to see how this bad boy stacks up against the new Evo. Fun times are coming, kids. Check out the gallery for large versions of the scans.

VIDEO: Felipe Massa shills for Shell, makes us chuckle

>>>>

Shell’s PR people appear to have a handle on how best to exploit the company’s relationship with Scuderia Ferrari. Whether it’s the spine-tingling spot that depicts historic Ferrari grand prix cars running on the streets in famous locales, or the very amusing “What will Schumi do next?” series (there were two spots), the videos offer a pleasant respite from the daily grind.

Today we got word that Shell’s back at it, and its new viral video star is Ferrari driver Felipe Massa. In the spot above, Massa’s diminutive Fiat leaves a pair of musclecar drivers speechless, and in the one we’ve pasted after the jump, Felipe interacts with customers at a gas station via a hidden camera/closed-circuit TV setup. His challenge to them: imitate the sound of a racing Ferrari. Suffice to say, Michael Winslow’s career is secure.

VIDEO: Run your car on saltwater? It could happen. Sorta.

>>>>

Former broadcast executive John Kanzius hoped his use of radio frequencies would be a cure for cancer, but when the researcher turned his machine toward a test tube of salt water, out came hydrogen.

Apparently, the radio frequencies emitted by Kanzius’s machine weaken the bonds between the hydrogen and oxygen molecules, releasing a stream of hydrogren that, as you can see in the video, burns brightly when lit.

Labs around the country are trying to replicate and figure out exactly how the process works, how it might be harnessed as an energy source, and just how many zeros Mr. Kanzius’s check will have on it.

Not addressed in the video is how much energy is needed to power that ray beam pointed at the water. Splitting water into its basic elements requires more energy than is released, and we’ll be very surprised if this method is any different.

Despite his growing fame, Kanzius says he hopes to sell his patent-pending discovery for loads of money so he can focus on his original goal of curing cancer.

Thanks, British Rover for the tip!

Rumormill: McLaren facing exclusion from 2007 F1 Championship

Filed under:

Thursday, September 13th, the World Motor Sport Council will meet to decide on whether McLaren should be punished for industrial espionage in the Stepneygate affair. What had been winding its way to a peaceful conclusion has now been blown back open with the recent revelation that the drivers exchanged information that came from the Ferrari dossier in McLaren’s possession.

Some newspapers claim that in the 166 pages of new evidence is enough damaging material that McLaren and its drivers could be excluded from the 2007 F1 World Championship. McLaren boss Ron Dennis has claimed that no one else in the team knew about the dossier — and this was before it was revealed that the drivers knew. Now it’s claimed that not only did the drivers know, but McLaren actually tried some of Ferrari’s technical innovations on its car. Ron Dennis is also accused of trying to bring Renault into the affair, but it is unclear how. If things go against McLaren, the Championship-leading team and its drivers could face exclusion from the Championship this year and beyond.

Rendered speculation: Jaguar XF convertible

The new Jaguar XF is undoubtedly a handsome car, albeit slightly marred by the awkward look of its headlights. It’s also a crucial model for Jaguar as the carmaker’s future is basically pegged on the success or failure of the new volume-seller. Because of this, developing several more variants of the car would be a smart a move as it should enable Jaguar to sell more cars.

Though nothing has been confirmed, new renderings of a possible convertible XF have turned up showing a car with a shortened wheelbase and only two doors. Jaguar already sells the XK convertible, but the significant price differential between the two should ensure only a limited number of sales being cannibalized. Also, if Jaguar were to build an XF droptop then we’re quite positive a coupe version would ensue. This also leaves the door open for even more models, perhaps a wagon or off-roader. Then again, maybe not.

Thanks for the tip, Iris!

eBay Find of the Day: Dr. Death’s Cadillac

Filed under:

It never ceases to amaze us how many autos with interesting histories go up for sale on eBay. Only last month, we saw Sean Connery’s BMW 6-series go under the virtual hammer and now we find a Cadillac once owned by Dr. Death himself, Jack Kevorkian, listed in eBay’s automotive section.

For those who don’t recall, Kevorkian was the controversial American pathologist made famous because of his support for euthanasia for terminally ill patients, and is most noted for his profound statement, “dying is not a crime.” Kevorkian even went to jail in 1999 for second-degree murder when he was accused of poisoning a 52-year old Michigan man a year earlier.

Being a native of the motor-state, there is only one make a well-to-do doctor would have on their list, and that’s Cadillac. The car is a 1989 white DeVille that’s been signed by the man himself and comes with all the original registration details for the would-be buyer. There are plenty of pics posted by the seller including some of Kevorkian actually signing the car.

Thanks for the tip, Niels!

McLaren working on a successor to the mighty F1

Ferrari may have kicked off the era of the modern supercar with the F40, but McLaren took the concept to a whole new level with the F1. Letting a legendary Formula One designer like Gordon Murray have essentially free reign brought forth a 241 mph, three-seat masterpiece of which fewer than 100 were ultimately built. Others challenged the F1s throne, and the Bugatti Veyron eventually overtook its performance marks, but there is still nothing quite like Murray’s original triumph.

McLaren has apparently decided that the time is right to create a successor. They are hard at work on a lightweight two-seater powered by a V8 engine under the name P11. That’s one less seat and four fewer cylinders than its forebear, but modern engine tech should be able to render something even faster. British magazine CAR has details of the new supercar that’s expected to launch in 2010 in their November print issue.

Mitsubishi Oz on the skids

Mitsubishi is facing an uphill battle in Australia and is facing the shutdown of its local production for good. Falling demand for large cars, a lack of a suitable export program and an uninspiring lineup have left Mitsubishi on the brink of extinction Down Under. The situation is so bad that auditors have described the situation as containing “significant uncertainty” after finding a net current asset deficiency of AUD$168 million in the financials for the small Aussie outcrop.

Mitsubishi only manufactures one model in Australia, the 380 sedan, which is basically a rebadged version of the American Galant. Most businesses with liabilities exceeding their assets would have to call it a day, sell whatever remaining assets are available, and pay off its creditors. However, Mitsubishi’s Australian chief executive Robert McEniry has a confident outlook on the situation and has indicated that Mitsubishi will continue producing cars locally.
