Time tackles 50 worst cars of all time

September 8, 2007

One of the staples of the magazine business is generating lists. There are lists of sexiest, richest, overrated, upcoming and more. Time magazine is no stranger to such lists and their latest effort is a list of Top 50 Worst cars of all time. They obviously put some thought into this one having come up with fifty members of the list as opposed to the usual top ten.

The list features most of the obvious suspects like the Pontiac Aztek, the AMC Pacer and the legendary East German Trabant. The list also includes some much more obscure models like the 1899 Horsey Horseless pictured above. There are some real surprises on the list too. Who would expect to find the Model T on a list of worst cars ever? Or that environmental icon, the GM EV-1?

Even if you don’t agree, they actually provide some decent rationales for choosing these cars. As popular as the Model T was, it wasn’t very sophisticated even for it’s time. There is also the issue of the societal and environmental costs that have come along with mass adoption of cars.

Thanks to all who tipped in.

Dr. Z likes the idea of developing engines with BMW

Daimler CEO Dr. Dieter Zetsche offered a choice quote to his nation’s leading weekly news mag, Der Spiegel, when he mentioned that the automaker would be open to developing an engine with the company’s cross-town rival, BMW. Apparently, Daimler is in talks with several companies about joint projects, but as of now, nothing is set in stone.

The idea of a co-developed engine between the two German heavyweights is an interesting idea, especially if both manufactures begin to focus their efforts on some form of innovative propulsion. More turbos? New fuels? Pixie-dust power? Who knows?

Sat nav leads driver and four rescue vehicles into the mud

England. Jolly Old. Coventry, to be exact. There resides a seriously bored driver going by the handle vennuth. Vennuth willfully ignored the cardinal rule of using nav systems: use your own judgement! It’s always amusing when the navigation system gets confused and directs you up your neighbor’s driveway when you’re really trying to reach the Raccoon Lodge. Most of us would just chuckle at the idea of driving our vehicle up a path marked “Not Suitable For Motor Vehicles” despite the nav system urging us on. Not vennuth.

Vennuth’s a member of the gtr.co.uk forum, so we were quite relieved to see it was a Renault van he managed to mire up to its hubs. The funny part comes when his amusing recounting notes how his ex gets more and more “narky,” he gets increasingly thirsty, and several successive rescue teams also become stuck. What should have been a simple tug-out turns into a 14-hour ordeal that ends with a lowly tractor succeeding where an ex-military Bedford wrecker failed. In proper fashion, there was a pub at the end of the unfit road, so it ended well.

Thanks for the tip, Leon!

Turkey makes sports cars? Say hello to the Etox Zafer I

Filed under:

Turkish camaker Etox has developed a new model called the Zafer I that it hopes will enter production next year. Still in the prototyping phase, the creators of the Etox Zafer hope to eventually build up to 500 units a year but plan a more modest run of just 20 cars/year initially. Looking similar to cars built by the UK’s TVR, the Zafer was designed over a period of six months and this latest prototype involved the work of over 46 engineers.

The story behind the Zafer is not too dissimilar a tale from Ferruccio Lamborghini starting his own sports car label after being insulted by Enzo Ferrari. In the case of the Etox, its founder Ercan Malkoç set about building his own car company after being denied the chance to examine a Lamborghini up close.

When, and if, it finally enters production, the Zafer will be available with a trio of engine options starting with a 125-hp 1.5L diesel engine, followed by 220-hp diesel 3.0L V6 and a 272-hp petrol 3.0L for a flagship model.

Nissan recalls 87,000 promo beverage mugs

Nissan is recalling up to 87,000 mugs that were given away to Japanese car shoppers as part of a recent promotion. The action was spurred after a customer reportedly became ill after drinking from one of the freebies, and tests showed that the cup’s lead content exceeded the permissible levels by 30-percent. In case you hadn’t guessed it by now, the mugs were made in the contaminated goods capital of the world: China.

Unofficial Porsche powered Fabcar to run in Grand Am finale

The factory-backed Porsche RS Spyders of Penske Racing have been leading the ALMS LMP2 class and even captured some overall victories this year. In the competing (well, kinda) Grand Am series, the official Porsche engine in the Daytona Prototype class is a 3.8-liter flat-six. The Spirit of Daytona team, however, wants to take a different approach.

It had the Lozano Brothers build a five-liter race-prepped version of the Cayenne V8 that they intend to debut at the series finale at Miller Motorsports Park on Sept. 15. Since Porsche hasn’t officially approved the project, it won’t allow the team to carry Porsche badging on the engine. Instead, the car will be labeled a Fabcar-Cayenne in its first run.

He fought the law: Jeremy Clarkson gets out of speeding ticket

Filed under:

Many of us have tried to evade those pesky speeding fines, more often than not, unsuccessfully. Not so for Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson who managed to have a case against him dropped despite the publicity and string of copy-cat defenses we’re sure will ensue.

The story goes like this: A V6 Alfa Romeo Brera was clocked doing 82mph in a 50mph zone by a speed camera in west London. A ticket was then issued to the car’s legal owner, Alfa Romeo, which then forwarded it to Clarkson because the car was on loan to him at the time.

Instead of coming clean, Clarkson took the matter to court and with the help of celebrity lawyer Nick Freeman managed to convince a Magistrate that since it couldn’t be proven he was in fact behind the wheel he shouldn’t have to pay the ticket. Clarkson, who wasn’t present at the hearing, was awarded full costs.

We wonder if this defense will work for anyone else caught speeding by a camera in a car that doesn’t belong to them.

Thanks for the tip, Thom!

Saab 9-5 Nordic Edition added to Euro range

Saab’s offering up a Nordic Edition 9-5 for 2008, and no that doesn’t mean an integrated sauna in the SportCombi and a complimentary copy of ABBA’s Greatest Hits, alltför dålig. The package is available as an upgrade for mid-level Vector versions of the sedan and wagon, and consists of cosmetic, equipment, and comfort enhancements. Leather swathes the entire interior, which gets a better audio system, special metallic trim and an electrochromic rearview mirror. New 17-inch alloys fill out the wheel openings, and the roof rails get a nice matte finish, while the rest of the exterior gets a monochromatic treatment. Theres even two new exterior colors; Pepper Green sounds good enough to eat, while Snow Silver won out over Straw Goat Brown.

Press release after the jump.

Volkswagen/Proton on-again, off-again deal back on again?

Late last year reports first surfaced that Volkswagen was interested in taking a controlling interest in Malaysian car maker Proton. But by March the talks had apparently broken down. Now for the first time Volkswagen has actually made a statement about Proton.

Volkswagen is picking up the pace in talks with the Malaysian government who happens to be Proton’s controlling shareholder. VW officials will meet with government officials in the coming weeks about how to proceed. The result could be either a takeover or just a partnership.
