Keyless entry pwned! Researchers say it takes less than an hour

August 29, 2007

We all take for granted that the little plastic key fob in our pockets is a secure way of locking and unlocking our car doors. But a group of researchers say they have devised a way to relatively quickly decipher your car’s unique code and totally pwn everything inside it.

The group says most car manufacturers are still using KeeLoq, an encryption technology developed in the 1980s, for their keyless systems. It’s pretty good technology, they say, that normally would take 100 computers several decades to break. But by listening in to communication between key fobs and cars, the researchers say they can narrow down the number of code options and, instead of say, 50 years, they’re in your car in about 50 minutes.

While they admit it’s much easier and quicker to break into a single car with an old-fashioned baseball bat, their new, high-tech method has one merry advantage. They lay out a scenario of a packed holiday-shopping-season parking lot. Parked in the center, a van full of snooping equipment and computers listens to hundreds of keyfobs wirelessly locking car doors. Then, with little more than a few keystrokes and an hour or so later, the crooks sing “Jingle Bells” to the tune of hundreds of car doors opening in harmony.

The group claims its intentions aren’t to ruin everybody’s Christmas morning, but instead hopes car manufacturers wake up and update their 20-year-old technology. So this holiday season, remember to keep your valuables and packages hidden well, and lock your cars’ doors the old-fashioned way.

The research group’s short press release is available after the jump.

Rendered Speculation: 2009 BMW F5

The German auto manufacturers seem hell bent on building a vehicle for every possible niche, and even willing to create a few niches of their own to introduce new products for new segments. The latest rumor has BMW building a new MPV-like people mover that is essentially a premium tall wagon, similar to the Mercedes R-Class. We had pics of a mule for what we were calling the V-Series a couple of weeks ago, but here’s a rendering by that’s said to preview the look of the finished product.

BMW is actually rumored to be working on two new models based on the 3- and 5-series platforms. These new models will introduce a new “F” moniker into the BMW lexicon and be called the F3 and F5. They will join a BMW lineup that’s currently swelling with upcoming new models that have yet to arrive.

Wrenching LeMons, Part 1

Click the image above for more shots of Project Lemons.

After toiling away at Modacar in Livermore, CA yesterday, we can officially say that Autoblog’s Project LeMons is underway. We were able to rip out the entire interior (sans dash), pull the rear hatch off, scrape out some sound deadening material, fit the rear end and begin to piece together a six-point roll cage for our FC RX-7. And we’re only slightly worse for the wear.

The next big step is to begin fabricating parts for the roll bar, including a main hoop that was originally intended for an EK Civic. Casey, our man wielding the welder, was able to get one of the plates installed, while our photog friend Brad cut some of the tubing to spec and snapped off several shots, all while while Jay and I got intimate with the diff.

We’re still debating themes and a team name, but we’re keeping our cards close to our chest until a decision is firmed up. We will say that it might carry the torch for a black coupe from the decade of excess, with the possibility of sporting a Camino’d bed and some sort of P.A. system.

There’ll be more updates to follow in the next few weeks, so watch this space and check out the gallery below, courtesy of Brad over at Shutterflick.

GALLERY: GM’s future interior designs

GM has revealed a set of concept renderings that showcase some futuristic new interior components, specifically designs for center stacks and climate-control systems of the future. One of the more interesting concepts also reveals a future multi-function key-fob with an LCD surface and voice recognition features inspired by none other than Knight Rider’s K.I.T.T.

Other drawings previewed future designs for the center stack of the Lambda-based CUVs, as well as a new design for the Malibu and Aura cars, and Cadillac’s future BRX SUV. Our favorite was a new configurable instrument cluster with a jewel-like central dial sitting atop an electronic faceplate that can switch between the speedometer, tacho or satnav system (see above). The images previewed three possible designs, one specific to Chevy, Pontiac and Cadillac.

It’s certainly interesting to watch GM work so hard on improving its interiors. The latest Cadillacs have shown major improvements in quality and design, and as these new renderings show, there’s more in store possibly for the rest of GM’s fleet. We just hope they get out of the labs and into production cars sooner rather than later. Check them out for yourself in the gallery below.

Sorry Volvo, Renault’s just not that into you

It’s no secret that Volvo has had an “FOR SALE” sign posted at the front door for some time now, but the number of bidders actually interested in the company are fast diminishing. The latest company to declare its non-interest is Renault, whose CEO Carlos Ghosn claimed that they were not interested in adding another brand to the stable.

Ghosn was quoted by Automotive News as saying “Renault needs new products, new technologies. It does not need a new brand.” He also said that Ford’s asking price was too rich for Renault’s taste, but no numbers were revealed.

Volvo has been one of the few success stories at Ford over the last decade. The company has revamped its lineup, increased sales, expanded its target audience, and most of all, is profitable now. It’s no surprise that Ford is after a high price for the jewel of its Premier Auto Group.

Apple, Volkswagen creating the iCar?

For years, an Apple-designed car has been both the butt of jokes and the dream of many an Apple fanboy. Could a fashionably cool car from Cupertino be on the horizon? German publication Sueddeutsche reports that Volkswagen chief Martin Winterkorn has been talking to Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs about something, though exactly what isn’t totally clear.

If you’re a follower of Apple product development, you know rumors and speculation can run absurdly wild years before the company unveils anything official. Combine that fact with Google’s ability to translate German (Google says Martin winter grain is the head of VW, for example) and the two might have only gotten together for a rousing game of Donkey Kong on Jobs’ iPhone.

More A4! Audi’s new sedan in S-Line trim

click above image for more pics of the new Audi A4 S-Line

The leakage of information coming forth from Audi AG on its new A4 (some say 2008, others say 2009) continues, and along with eight new high-resolution, desktop-wallpaper size pics in our gallery, we also have four new shots of the A4 S-Line, which, while not as potent as the actual high-performance S4, at least looks the part. The S-Line treatment is seen here dressing up an A4 with the 3.2L FSI engine that produces 265 hp and 243 ft-lbs. of torque. The S-Line trim adds the obviously larger wheels with a strong seven split-spoke design, though other than that, exterior changes seem to be minimal. The paint color may be exclusive to the S-line, and it appears the chrome trim around the greenhouse has been blacked out, as well as the lower rear bumper.

Chrysler releases Dodge Grand Caravan Cargo Van

Click image for commercial-grade photo gallery

Grand Caravan Cargo Van interiorChrysler has just released details on its commercial-grade Dodge Grand Caravan Cargo Van, which has tradesmen, small business owners, and other small fleet customers in its crosshairs (pun fully intended). Since it’s a work vehicle, the second and third row seats have been eliminated. This creates 143.8 cubic feet of storage capacity in back, and to keep it from getting instantly trashed, the cargo floor is covered with an industrial-grade material. The interior trim for the second- and third-row seating areas can also be deleted completely, as the working man’s Grand Caravan is designed to be a blank slate that upfitters can customize for role-specific duties.

The forward compartment is equipped with YES Essentials fabric seats, a decent stereo, the to-be-expected variety of cupholders, power outlets, and storage areas, and a rubberized floor capable of withstanding daily punishment. Powered by Chrysler’s 175-horsepower 3.3L flex-fuel V6, the Grand Caravan Cargo Van sports a 17/24 city/highway EPA rating. 16-inch steelies and a heavy-duty suspension are standard, and both the dual sliders and rear hatch are manually operated. While a panelized version isn’t currently offered, the existing rear glass is tinted dark for maximum privacy, so you’ll have to moosh your face right up against it to see what goodies your local bakery’s hauling back there.
