Pebble Beach Week 2007: The Monterey Historics at Laguna Seca, Pt. I

August 19, 2007

The track action at Laguna Seca can be so overwhelming that we figured we’d break up the galleries a bit. This post will feature nothing but on-track competition and a couple of ambiance shots from Saturday’s sessions. Seven classes ran then and another seven will be heading out on Sunday. There are completely different cars in each set, so we’ll try to get somebody out there for Sunday’s racing as well. Rather than trying to cover every car in every group at every corner, we picked about 60 favorite shots from about 4 or 5 groups. Click away.

This was the 34th Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races, and Toyota was back as title sponsor. We missed most of their demonstration runs but can honestly say they are great hosts. Lexus pace cars and free survival packs for everybody that wanted them were a nice touch. As we told you before, Indy cars from 1957’s Roadster era were highlighted because Laguna Seca is also celebrating its 50th anniversary of operations. The Race of Legends was also run Saturday and after some fender-banging close action, it came down to the wire and Derek Bell eked it out over a hard-charging Bobby Rahal. Emerson Fittipaldi was third. The most notable thing about the race besides the fact that Vic Elford got punted into the kitty litter at turn 11, is that $25,000 will go to a charity in Bell’s name as the champion. Unfortunately, we didn’t get any good pics of that because the media center decided to serve lunch at that time. But it looked thrilling on the monitors.

Meadow Brook Concours 2007 - Vintage four cylinder bikes

Click on the 1913 Pierce Four for a high res galley of bikes at Meadow Brook

One of the special features of this year’s Meadow Brook Concours was a collection of 40 four-cylinder motorcycles. The bikes on display ranged from a 1904 FN 4 with its shaft drive up to a 1969 Honda CB750. The transverse-engined Honda ushered in the beginning of the modern four-cylinder motorcycle era that includes most modern sportbikes.

Some of the others included a 1913 Pierce Four, which was one of the last from the entity spun off from the Pierce-Arrow car company. Harley-Davidsons and Indians were also well-represented in the crowd. Most four cylinder bikes fell by the wayside by 1948, although Ariel soldiered on until 1959.

Winding Road sees the (possible) future of Pentastar products

Over the past decade, Chrysler has hosted a number of college students interested in pursing a career in car design through its internship program. And while few among us haven’t sketched our dream machine in the margins of our notebooks during our formative years, these students take it two steps beyond the next level. Not only do they get to intern on the project throughout the summer, they get to present their concepts to Chrysler’s design team and executives at the end.

Winding Road had the opportunity to check out what these budding designers came up with, and they brought back over 30 renderings, along with details outlining everything from drivetrain components to interior elements.

The two concepts, dubbed the Chrysler Forte and Dodge Decept, are beautifully rendered and detailed here. Check it out and tell us what you think.

Woodward Dream Cruise 2007: The Classics

Click on the Volvo for a high-res gallery of some of the classics on Woodward

Tens of thousands of cars crammed Woodward Ave and the surrounding area on Saturday, with a large percentage of them being of an age that would be called “middle” if they were human. Many of these more mature machines even stretched into the octogenarian range and beyond.

The vast majority of the cars stopping, starting and parked were domestically-produced but there were numerous exceptions. The imports ranged from the mundane to the exotic, including a 1965 Volvo B18 (shown above) to Rollers and Bentleys. Elsewhere, Porsches shared the road Corvettes, and an old Dodge proved that pickups weren’t always the monster trucks the Rams are today. Check out the gallery for a sampling of what we saw.

eBay find of the week: Mazda FD RX-7 equipped with Grand National turbo’d V6

Here’s another example of liking the individual hardware pieces, but being repulsed by the idea of the ultimate combination. RX7s are cool. Grand Nationals are cool. But a vehicular mash-up of a 1993 RX-7 powered by a Buick GN’s V6 seems a little weird. Weird to think that it even gets past regulatory agencies, as it’s an older, totally alien engine in a newer car, which might make it interesting to register in a state with California emissions. The swap is well done, though, even if we’d question the handling a heavier and much more powerful engine in the snout brings with it. It’s fast, but does it understeer like a pig and snap the tail out? The seller seems to have focused on posting low elapsed times in the quarter mile, so think about that when you conjure what the dynamics may be. Follow the jump for more.
