The 280 MPH streamlined Acabion GTBO

March 23, 2007

Here is a vehicle which is expected to be able to reach 450 kilometers per hour, or about 280 miles per hour, and accelerate to 400 kilometers per hour, or about 250 miles per hour, in 20 seconds. This performance comes courtesy of a 700-horsepower turbocharged engine and swoopy, streamlined bodywork. The Acabion GTBO is the work of a Swiss company, and it’s planning on putting them on the street; 26 of them in the next four years to be exact.

The outrigger wheels on the sides of the machine do what a motorcycle riders legs usually do, namely, keep the vehicle upright under low speed, and retract when the vehicle is moving fast enough to remain stable. The power-to-weight ratio handily beats vehicles such as the Koenigsegg CCXR, Pagani Zonda F and Bugatti Veyron, and compares quite well with current F1 cars and Moto GP motorcycles. We’d like to drive one, maybe not all the way to 280 mph, but drive one nonetheless.

New owner welcomes Vauxhall VXR Astra with most comprehensive car wash ever

The arrival of a new car in your garage is a lot like returning home from your honeymoon. For the first month, you wash the car every other day to show off its hot body. A couple months go by and you’re still washing it every weekend. After six months, you find the time for a wipe down once a month. After a year, though, you’re happy when it rains and washes the salt off.

For this English gentleman and his new Vauxhall Astra VXR, however, the honeymoon will likely last longer than most. We have never seen a new car owner go to such incredible lengths to make sure his new ride is showing its best side. To say that he “detailed” the car would be a gross understatement. Most detail jobs don’t involve washing the car with 100 litres of zero ppm RO water, inspecting the finish with a blue light gun for blemishes and applying a $7,118 wax job. We have to say though, after reading his thorough play-by-play of the process and viewing the before and after pics, it made a bigger difference to the car’s appearance than we expected.

New York Preview: AMG debuting mystery model

Owners of a Mercedes-Benz AMG model who have access to the brand’s Private Lounge website have been notified that a mystery model from AMG will make its world debut at the New York Auto Show in a couple of weeks. The only hint as to what model it might be are a few detail pics and a profile shot of the car cloaked in a sheet. As for what model it could be, World Car Fans suggests that it’s likely the AMG C 63, the high-performance version of the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class that was only officially debuted earlier this month in Geneva. We tend to agree, although the profile shot shows the contour of a door handle that belongs to the front passenger door, but not a corresponding handle for the rear passenger door. All questions will be answered in early April when we’re on hand as the cover’s pulled.

Nissan offering buyouts to 775 Tennessee workers

Seems like few automakers are immune to downsizing these days, and Nissan is no exception. Today the automaker announced it’s reducing its workforce in Tennessee by 12.5%, which equates to 775 heads. The reduction come via way of voluntary buyouts that include a $45,000 cash payment and additional $500 for every year worked. All the workers come from Nissan’s two assembly plants in Tennessee, one in Smyrna where the Altima and Maxima, Pathfinder and Xterra are built, and the other in Decherd, which builds the engines to supply the Smyrna plant, as well as Nissan’s assembly plant in Canton, Miss. Fortunately, 303 workers were reportedly eligible for retirment anyway and happy to take the buyout.

Mazda considering CX-5, a Hakaze-inspired crossover

Mazda made it clear at the beginning of this auto show season that each of the three concepts it debuted would be more production ready than the last. First there was the Nagare concept that debuted at the LA Auto Show, and then came the Ryuga concept that was shown at the Detroit Auto Show. The final concept, called the Hakaze, debuted this month in Geneva, and according to a report from Auto Express is destined to inspire the design of a production CUV called the CX-5.

The naming convention used here is apt, as the new ute will combine the utility of the CX-7 with the fun-to-drive nature of the MX-5. What’s more, it appears the CX-5 will be the second vehicle in Mazda’s lineup after the RX-8 to sport a pair of rear-hinged “suicide” doors that provide easier access to vehicle’s second row of seats.

The rendering shown on Auto Express reveals the CX-5 will share a basic shape with the Hakaze concept, but many cues will be toned down on the production version. Considering that Mazda used an interesting ripple effect on the exterior sheetmetal of all three concepts, we were surpised to see the CX-5’s sheetmetal is as smooth as a baby’s butt. Regardless, the CX-5 could reach showrooms as early as 2010.

PGA Pro goes street racing, ends with fatality

There isn’t always a lot of overlap between the world of golf and our own automotive realm. Tiger gets some folks interested in Buicks and there are the occasional holes-in-one that result in a set of keys for the lucky ball striker, but other than that, we don’t usually cross paths very much. Sadly, today is one of those days. PGA golfer Arjun Atwal was involved in an incident that resulted in the death of a fellow motorist outside Disney World in Orlando, Florida on March 10.

Although no criminal charges have been filed, witnesses have said that Atwal and the other driver, John N. Park, were street racing. Documents from the Florida Highway Patrol say that Atwal estimated his speed at around 80 mph on the 45 mph road, although witnesses said they thought the speeds were more like 100 mph. Atwal was driving his 2006 BMW M6 alongside Park in a 2006 Mercedes-Benz CLS55 when the Benz “flipped and killed its driver.” Park apparently lost control, clipped a fence and small tree and the car somersaulted up to eight times, disintegrating in the process.

The investigation is ongoing, but it doesn’t appear the two vehicles collided or that either driver was impaired by alcohol or drugs at the time of the accident.

Thanks for the tip, Bobby.

In the Autoblog Garage: 2007 Kia Rondo EX

click on the above image to view additional pics of the 2007 Kia Rondo EX

We just gave back the keys to a vehicle that would have shamed my old Camaro RS in more than just number of usable seats. It also had 12 more horses from two fewer cylinders, drank a little less gas, had a sunroof that probably won’t leak until well after the 10 year warranty runs out and would carry as many as seven full-grown friends.

Kia’s new Rondo is classified as a compact MPV in Europe, where it’s been sold as the Carens since 2003. Add 17″ wheels and that 182 hp V6, and Uncle Sam calls it a midsize wagon. Kia, of course, wants you to call it a crossover. Most shoppers will see it as a stylish, comfortable, affordable people-mover. Just don’t call it a minivan.

Why are all these Hondas being recalled?

We’ve reported three times on Honda’s recent major recall that’s affected vehicles sold in the U.S., China and Japan. Not being mechanics, we’ve done our best to relay what the actual issue is that’s prompted the recalls, but most articles we’ve found on the topic stop after mentioning something about the fuel pump and engines that won’t start.

Fortunately, Honda noticed we were in the dark and shot us a quick email to explain exactly what the issue is, which we found interesting since the mainstream media’s descriptions have been pretty vague and off the mark in comparison.

The issue involves not the fuel pump, but a fuel pump relay, which is like a fuse. During production of the relay, presumably by a supplier, sealer leaked inside and coated parts of the metal coil that transfers the electrical signal within the relay. As the relay activates during normal operation, it continually heats and cools. Because these particular relays may be coated with sealer, they cannot contract and expand properly, which could cause them to become brittle and break. If that happens, then the car will not start or may stall while driving. Fortunately, the relay is located right in the under dash fuse box, so repairing the problem is simply a matter of popping a new relay in.

This more detailed explanation certainly puts the severity of the recall in perspective, though unfortunately its scope, which now reaches over 1,000,000 vehicles sold around the world, cannot be denied.

UK gets diesel 3-door Suzuki Grand Vitara

It used to be that US buyers could regularly choose 2- or 3-door (if they were closed-roof models) small SUVs if they felt that’s what suited their needs. They included the Samurai, and later, the Sidekick from Suzuki, the Isuzu Rodeo, and the Toyota RAV4, just to name a few. Today, our market’s loaded with small SUVs, but they’re all on longer wheelbases and sport four doors and a rear hatch, just like their larger brethren.

In other markets, you can still get the smaller SUVs from some manufacturers, however. We like the 3-door Suzuki Grand Vitara quite a bit. It keeps the Vitara’s good looks, but compresses them into a short, buggy-like package. This week, Suzuki UK announced the availability of a diesel version of the small Grand Vitara, which to us seems like a seriously versatile little machine. A 4x4 sized like a commuter car that manages 38.2 mpg on the combined cycle definitely has some appeal. Keep in mind that the Brits generally use imperial gallons in their ratings. If that’s indeed the case here, we’d be lower - around 32 mpg (thanks to Brian in the comments for correcting me). Still pretty nice. If you were given the option, would you choose something like this over one of the current misers (i.e. Fit, Yaris, Prius)?

Press release after the jump.

Hyundai “BH” in U.S. by 2008, will not replace Korea’s Equus

Despite our earlier speculation, Hyundai’s upcoming BH model won’t be a replacement for the Korean Equus. Hyundai Motor Co. says now that its new “BH” luxury car will slot in between the Azera and the Equus, in a spot formerly filled by the front-wheel drive Dynasty. This V8 powered rear-wheel-drive sedan will go on sale in South Korea at the end of this year or possibly in early 2008. U.S. sales would start soon after that. We’ll actually see the car, sans camo, as the Genesis Concept next month at the New York Auto Show.

With the Azera selling between $25,000 and $30,000, we’d guess the new BH will run $30,000 to $40,000. With hopes of targeting cars from Lexus and Infiniti to BMW and Mercedes-Benz, the Hyundai should offer tastefully elegant styling and the rumored 300-hp 4.6-liter V8 at a much lower price level than the competition. Some outlets have even reported a range of V-8s, including 4.6, 5.0 and 5.5-liter versions.
