The car that will form the basis of the new baby Ford for the US market will make it’s first public appearance in Geneva this week, and we’ve got the official images from Mazda right here. The little machine has a style that fits right in with the current Mazda design language, including the prominent front fender curves and the lower body character line that sweeps up into the rear fenders. Engines for Europe include a trio of new gas engines of 1.3 and 1.5L displacements ranging from 75hp to 103hp. The two should be arriving on our shores sometime in 2008.

Audi TT in Gulf Oil livery even more beautiful

Filed under:

Until today, I personally thought Audi’s first generation TT looked better than the latest design. It was simpler — more Germanic if that’s possible. But dress up one of the new ones in the historic, iconic orange and blue of Gulf Oil and I’m swayed.

Fourtitude has photos of what they say is the personal car of Michael Dick, Audi AG board member in charge of Technical Development. Michael has apparently taken advantage of his position (wouldn’t you?) to modify his TT in ways many of us couldn’t, such as the car’s R8-sourced Recaro seats with matching orange stitching. Like the guys at Fourtitude, we wonder what borrowed, unseen power bits lurk under that baby-blue hood.

Even more beautiful, higher-res pics are available at Fourtitude.

Holy shift! Turn your toilet into a 4-speed

Filed under:

As super car nuts, there shouldn’t be any part of our lives left untouched by the machines we love most. We’re guessing that’s why the Down Shift toilet handle was invented. It’s made (in America, btw) of lightweight aluminum and comes with all necessary hardware to turn your stock toilet into a 4-speed, manually-shifted lead-sled lavatory. OK, so it doesn’t really give you four speeds, but there is a 4-speed shift pattern on top.

This is a perfect addition to your bathroom fixtures if you already have the carbon fiber toilet seat or even the full carbon fiber toilet. Oh, and the handle is much cheaper at $39.95.

VIDEO: When EVOs attack! The life and death of a seagull

Seagull encounter

Picture this: You’re tired from a long day of flying. You glide in toward a nice, flat landing spot when, out of nowhere, you hear a high-pitched whine, see a blue streak and POW! You’re toast.

So goes the story of an unlucky seagull who met his maker following a chance encounter with a Mitsubishi Evo going 180 mph. Two video cameras were rolling to catch the action, and we’ve embedded both clips after the jump. In the first one, you can see the speedo maxxed out just prior to impact. At the end of the video glass shards are visible on the dash and tiny bits of feather float in the air. The second video shows the best view of impact. If you have a weak constitution or if you’re an animal lover you probably don’t want to watch this. Thankfully, neither the driver nor passenger suffered any injuries, and our fine feathered friend never knew what hit him.

Follow the jump to watch the events unfold.

Targa Newfoundland rally airs on SPEED today!

Filed under:

Every gearhead has their own motorsports fantasy; some more exotic than others. One seemingly attainable event is the annual Targa Newfoundland rally that’s held every September on over 2,000 km of tarmac covering the eastern and central parts of the island.

This past year’s event was another entertaining seven day adventure, with every manner of historical, classic and modern conveyance present and accounted for. For those that didn’t follow the race last year or wanted to attend but couldn’t, SPEED is airing an hour long show on the 2006 event today at 3:30 PM EST (12:30 PST).

Check it out and be sure to visit the Targa website for more details on this year’s event.

Thanks for the tip, TinTin!

The MINIamino

We don’t know what kind of sick person would do such a thing to a MINI Cooper S? But we have to say, even if you don’t think it’s cool, it’s at least done well.

The German Car Scene says Benedikt Schiermeyer turned a perfectly innocent Cooper S into a virtual MINlamino at the request of a customer. Great job, Benedikt. It almost looks factory, and the wood floor in the bed is a very nice touch. But, personally, I think I’d rather have one of the original Mini trucks.

We’d love to hear from either Benedikt or the owner of this cute little custom to find out more about how it was created. Shoot us a note if either of you are reading.

GCS has more photos including one taken during the build.
