DaimlerChrysler may keep Jeep if Chrysler Group sold

March 1, 2007

The German business daily Handelsblatt reported today that DaimlerChrysler may keep the Jeep brand if it eventually sells the Chrysler Group. The reason is that Jeeps fit well the Mercedes-Benz brand and offers unique product that Daimler couldn’t offer on its own. If true, that would mean interested parties would be bidding on the Chrysler and Dodge brands alone. Of course, a few Jeep vehicles like the Compass share their platforms with other Chrysler Group models like the Dodge Caliber, so those links would likely still remain for some time after a potential sale. Considering that the only two companies who appear to have expressed any interest in purchasing the Chrysler Group are General Motors and Magna, taking Jeep off the table would likely make the deal even less attractive than many analysts claim it to be. Jeep sold about 595,000 units in 2006 and sales were up 14% in January and down 5% in February.

Thanks for the tip, JuanTan!

Subaru’s U.S. offensive begins, new CEO appointed

Just one day after Subaru revealed that the U.S. market would play a pivotal role in its new five-year plan, the company has announced a new leader for Subaru of America. Effective April 1st, Tomohiko Ikeda (shown) will assume the role of CEO of Subaru of America, replacing Kunio Ishigami who held the post since June of 2004. Ishigami is retiring after leading Subie to three record sales years in a row and achieving 200,000 sales in 2006.

Ikeda had already worked for Subaru of America as vice president from 1988 to 2002 before becoming corporate vice president of Fuji Heavy Industries according to Automotive News, so the man has some insight into what makes the automaker’s U.S. unit run.

By the Numbers: February 2007

Filed under:

Almost all the sales numbers are in for the month of February, and it appears the good and bad news has been spread fairly evenly across the industry. Ford Motor Company and the Chrysler Group received the brunt of bad news, with sales down 13.5% and 8%, respectively. In Ford’s defense, sales to rental fleets were down 30%, so at least the Blue Oval is actively trying to ween itself from an addiction to fleet sales. General Motors, however, managed to eek out a small 3.4% improvement in sales despite being dragged down by a few of its brands like Buick (-29.5%) and HUMMER (-26%). Saturn, however, which sold more than Buick and HUMMER combined, imrpoved an impressive 59.4% thanks to strong sales of the new Aura and VUE. Of the major automakers, Toyota once again improved the most, gaining 12.2% more sales than last February.

Among full-line automakers, General Motors easily sold the most (311,763), with Ford in second (211,150) as usual and Toyota (187,330) easily passing the Chrysler Group (174,506) again for the third spot. Coincidentally, the major brands shook out the same way with GM’s Chevrolet brand (187,088) selling the most, Ford coming in second (173,794) and Toyota (164,812) third.

Geneva Preview: BMW shows off M5 Touring

Click image for large high-res photo gallery

For those of us who love the practicality of station wagons, BMW has built what may well be the ultimate appliance: the M5 Touring. The recipe is simple: take one 5-series wagon, plant Bimmer’s 507-horsepower V10 in the engine bay, hook it to the 7-speed SMG, and infuse the whole shebang with the style, handling and attitude you’ve come to expect from a car sporting the “M” badge.

Only this time, the sub-5-second 0-60 time is associated with a car that will happily transport the wife, kids and associated luggage (maybe the family pooch, too) on whatever road trip you happen to dream up. We’d be dreaming up trips to vacation spots that are far away, with scenic, curvy roads connecting the origin and destinantion. Then again, a straight-through blast down I-95 to visit the Mouse would probably be fine, too. We’re confident good time would be made.

Alas it’s all a dream, because we’re not scheduled to get The Practical Man’s M5. Actually, with a sticker price of over £67,000 — the equivalent of $131,000 in the greenbacks — it wouldn’t make it into the average family’s garage anyway. That doesn’t mean it’s not worth swooning over, though. Speaking as someone with the whole family unit + dogs at home, staring at pictures of this thing is the grown-up equivalent of the Countach poster I had on my bedroom wall back when being a grown-up was the furthest thing from my mind.

Press release after the jump.

Ford hires “Dirty Jobs” host to sell F-150s

Click on the photo for a high-res gallery of Mike Rowe and the F-150

One of my son’s favorite shows on the Discovery Channel after MythBusters is Dirty Jobs. Mike Rowe is the host of Dirty Jobs and on each episode he tries out various nasty jobs that real people have to do, such as skull cleaner, garbage pit technician, and owl vomit collector. Today Ford announced that Mike is joining its F-series promotional team. He’ll be in a series of commercials that demonstrate the improved capabilities of the 2008 F-150 in towing and hauling heavy loads. The Ford press release is after the jump.

Dodge offering free HEMI for trucks in February

After a soft sales month in February, Dodge is planning to bounce back with a new “National Truck Month” campaign for March. As part of the campaign, customers buying a Ram 1500 or Dodge Durango can opt up to the 5.7L HEMI V8 for free, an option that normaly costs about $1,700. In anticipation of the campaign, Dodge dealers have reportedly stocked up on Rams and Durangos equipped with the popular engine.

We’re still compiling all the sales numbers reported by each automaker for the month of February, but can tell you that the Chrysler Group was off about 8% last month, with Ram sales down 4% and sales of the Durango off 43%.

The ultimate Taurus rental… just in case

click above image to view a high-res version

While the debate rages on around whether or not returning the Taurus name to Ford’s lineup will do anything to help improve sales of this large sedan, we’ve had our fun imagining what different versions Ford could produce. First there was the Taurus Heritage Edition that actually won over a lot of readers with its nod to nostalgia, and then there was our first post on a possible resurrection of the SHO model.

While we’re of the mind that the return of the Taurus will improve sales, or at least not hurt them, there are some who argue that the Taurus is, was and always will be a rental car. For them, Galvin, the artist who rendered our first two Taurus models, has created this, the ultimate Taurus rental car for the new millennium, complete with many square feet of unpainted black plastic, anonymous wheel covers and an offset Blue Oval that lets everyone know the driver is a little off, as well. While we wouldn’t go so far as to say the Five-Hundred/Taurus is our favorite large sedan in the segment, we wish it well in 2008 and beyond and hope its future doesn’t come to this.

HAMANN makes its mark on new MINI

click the above image to view high-res shots of the HAMANN MINI

Hot on the heels of MINI previewing its new John Cooper Works Tuning Kit, HAMANN has revealed to us its interpretation of Britain’s (Germany’s?) tiny terror. The HAMANN MINI sports a new aero kit with a front spoiler, side sills, and a two-piece rear diffuser. HAMANN flag graphics are also available for the sides of the car and the roof. In addition, HAMANN has crafted three new wheels being offered in 17-inch and 18-inch sizes.

In terms of hardware, the German tuner has fitted the MINI with a new rear silencer and stainless steel tailpipes, as well as a new air intake, both of which purportedly improve the engine’s aural assault. Not that MINIs are known for bad handling, but HAMANN felt it could make a few improvement in this area, as well. A completely new suspension sits under the MINI’s skin and includes heigh-adjustable coilovers with new shocks and springs. Inside, HAMANN has added a number of aluminum interior accents and offers two interior trim packages that dot the cabin with exposed carbon fiber. No news on what it will cost to outfit your R56 with HAMANN components, but since each component can be ordered individually one can spread out the cost to ease the cash drain.

BP’s Helios House: Greener than the fuel it sells

Last Friday the covers were pulled off of a brand new gas station on the corner of Olympic and Robertson in L.A. Dubbed the Helios House by BP, the Frank Gehry-inspired structure is what the petroleum producer calls “a little better gas station,” referring to the earth friendly features built into the structure. For instance, the pump palace is composed of recyclable uncoated stainless steel triangles, the rooftop is covered with 90 solar panels and collects rainwater to irrigate nearby fauna flora, the underside of the roof features low-energy lighting and the concrete base is mixed with pieces of recycled glass. Besides the materials used to build Helios House, BP employees will also go around and check each customers’ tire pressure to ensure the most eco-friendly inflation pressure is acheived.

Environmental activists, however, are not swayed by BP’s “green-washing”, citing that the absence of alternative fuels like ethanol and biodiesel being offered at Helios House reveals a giant paradox with the facility. BP recognizes the inconsistency baked into its new building, and is considering adding alternative fuels in the future. As some activists point out, however, it’s hard to criticize the oil company because at least the Helios House is a positive step, even if it is owned by what is traditionally considered an enemy of the environment.

Geneva Preview: MINI Cooper S John Cooper Works Tuning Kit

click above image to view high-resolution versions of the MINI Cooper S JCW Tuning Kit

We reported yesterday that MINI might be developing two John Cooper Works Tuning Kits for the new R56 model. While we don’t have confirmation that their will be two kits, news of one kit has been made official. Today, MINI previewed the official John Cooper Works Tuning Kit for its Cooper S model, which would be the “Stage One Kit” if there turns out to be two.

The JCW Tuning Kit bumps power of the Cooper S up to 192bhp and torque to 184 ft-lbs. Torque can be further bumped to 199 ft-lbs. with an “overboost” function. The power increases come mainly from a JCW exhaust, new intake and remapped ECU software. As for pricing, the kit will cost €1689,80. Prices for the U.S. aren’t yet available, but we might learn that at the Geneva Motor Show next week. Being a MINI, the Cooper S JCW model can be personalized with thousands of additional options that include wheels, body kits, seats, etc. Stay tuned and check out the pics in our high-resolution gallery.
