Alan Mulally rallies the troops for a come back

Filed under:

‘Everyone loves a comeback story. Let’s work together to write the best one ever.’ That’s how Ford’s new CEO, Alan Mulally, ended his first company-wide e-mail to Blue Oval employees on Friday.

The e-mail, which can be read here, is one of the first definitive steps in asserting himself to Ford employees as the turnaround man that the automaker needs and judging by the text, he sees a long road ahead.

Mulally generalizes about the impending slog throughout his e-mail, identifying the various changes that need to take place to bring Ford back to viability and profitability. His plan for the future centers on a ‘universally agreed to and understood business plan’ that involves recognizing the ills of the automaker and making decisive changes to rectify those problems.

Aside from the expected job losses that will go through the end of summer next year, Mulally seems to acknowledge that one of the biggest problems is the entrenched bureaucracy within Ford’s executive ranks. According to most reports, he won’t stand for it and he’s made the effort to bring in top-level execs on Thursdays (just Thursdays?) to answer questions and demand accountability.

Thankfully, his letter is strewn with encouraging words towards Ford’s workforce and he genuinely seems to believe that there is a bright future for the automaker. To him, FoMoCo needs streamlining and focus (Euro, please), and this e-mail seems to exude that sense of leadership to all involved.

Camry ECU won’t let drivers give it the boot

A few years back I had the good fortune of owning a WRX wagon whose tenure began with me leaving it unmodified for as long as I could stand. All told, it only took about two months for all rational thought to be overwhelmed by the relentless pursuit of ponies and I found myself at a highly regarded, local tuner.

After several conversations with the owner, I was informed that the ECU of the Subie was highly adaptive and had the ability to learn a few tricks from its driver. In the end, a quick reflash of the ECU’s fuel and ignition maps could bring a few more ponies to the party. All it took was a laptop and a couple dyno pulls, and I was ten HP richer.

It seems that Toyota has a similarly adaptable ECU in its Camry, which takes cues from the driver’s inputs and then operates the engine accordingly. If the driver is say, timid and easy on the throttle (not going to make generalizations about Camry drivers here) then the ECU will recognize the driver’s overall character and taper back on the heavy dumping of fuel and air into the cylinders.

The problem it seems, is that when said timid driver needs a boost of juice, the Camry’s brain doesn’t cooperate, causing driver’s to complain of mild bucking and hesitation. The drive-by-wire throttle (we still like our cables, thank you) is partly to blame, as it sends the majority of information back to the ECU.

Toyota released a TSB for the issue and a quick software tweak seems to solve the problem. Only owners that recognize a hesitation in acceleration are encouraged to come in for the service, though it’s safe to assume that most Camry drivers won’t notice a problem.

Fiat Brazil showing FCC Adventure concept in Sao Paulo

Fiat’s Brazilian division, Fiat Automoveis, has prepped this concept car for the Sao Paulo Auto Show. The Fiat Concept Coupe (FCC) Adventure is a crossover, off-road coupe, that combines rugged styling with a swept-back, insanely raked windshield for a sportscar-on-’roids look.

The FCC Adventure concept uses the 167-hp 2.4-liter five-cylinder engine from the Fiat Stilo Abarth. It rides on 18-inch rims clad in Pirelli PZeros with a four-wheel independent suspension and adjustable shocks. The unique paintjob uses a color-changing paint that ranges from yellow to red, while inside the cabin the FCC gets equipped with competition-themed five-point racing harnesses.

Although the concept looks ready to storm the dunes, it’s strictly front-wheel-drive and rides on road tires. Interesting design, but even in concept form it still lacks the theoretical go for all that show.

More pics after the jump.

(Thanks for the tip, Bruno!)

Tuner Tuesdays: “Gulf-wing” HUMMER GT by GeigerCars

Obscene, you have a new ride: the HUMMER GT. German tuning house GeigerCars.de GmbH has managed to take the most outlandish and vulgar vehicle on the market and make it even more so with a host of visual and performance enhancements that altogether manage to scream “look at me” louder than a sorority girl at Mardis Gras.

First the good stuff: GeigerCars has upgraded the 6.0L V8 with a supercharger, added a new ECU and piped in a new stainless steel exhaust system, bringing the magic numbers up to 556 horsepower and 564 lb-ft of torque.

GeigerCars also upgraded the suspension, dropping the ride height by 100 millimeters and adding new anti-roll bars. The most obvious addition, though, are the rims. Forget about dinner plates, this sick puppy rides on freakin’ flying saucers: giant chrome 30-inch rims, 10 inches wide at all four corners. The mammoth wheels are shod with 315/30R 30 Pirelli Scorpion Zero tires. The wheel and tire package alone costs €28,000, but GeigerCars also offers packages with 20, 22, 24, 26 and 28-inch rims. (Remember when 18 inches were considered big?) Bringing all that heft to a stop, GeigerCars have outfitted the HUMMER GT with a €10,000 brake system with 15-inch cross-drilled discs with 8-pot calipers up front.

Inside the cabin, GeigerCars outfitted the truck with faux carbon trim and a full multimedia sytem with sat-nav, DVD player and television receiver showing on twin LCDs. Finally, outside, the HUMMER GT was painted in the baby blue and orange livery of the classic Porsche 917 of McQueen LeMans fame, complete with Gulf logos above the rear fender. The party piece, though (as if the blingtastic sport-ute needed more), are the front doors that can be opened normally or upwards, scissor-style.

With all the do-dads and bolt-ons listed here, the HUMMER GT sells for a jaw-dropping €133,900, and will propel itself to sixty in 7.9 second flat. This HUMMER really is “like nothing else”, and if all that flash won’t get you noticed, nothing will.

RR of the Day: the ugly bugeye ‘02 Subaru WRX

We’re going forward with our EVO / WRX theme this week for the RR of the Day feature, which means we’ll do our best to pick out good examples of these cars in our Flickr pool while they last. If you’ve got an EVO or WRX you haven’t submitted yet, follow the jump to learn how. It’s easy!

Today’s RR of the Day is Flickr member hsubaru’s 2002 Subaru Impreza WRX, what he refers to as “the ugly bugeye one.” When it comes to the WRX, the uglier the better we always say. Hsubaru has added just a smidge of visual flair by adding Prodrive P7 wheels wearing slightly used STi rubber. He’s also lifted the hoodscoop from the manlier STi, as well. Other STi parts include the rear sway bar, struts and springs, which means this normal looking WRX is more than meets the eye. Follow the jump for a short list of other performance mods hsubaru has added, most of which allow the WRX to gulp down more air and expel it out the rear. Also, click here for a full gallery of shots taken by hsubaru himself, which is impressive with a camera in his hands.

Remember, if you’ve got a Subaru WRX or Mitsubishi EVO Lancer, submit it!
Simply upload photos of your ride into our Flickr group. We select one vehicle to highlight each week day, and on the weekend let you vote for the RR of the Week. Detailed instructions can be found after the jump.

Performance mods:

  • Helix Uppipe
  • Scoobysport Downpipe
  • Cobb catback
  • Perrin i/c, turbo inlet hoses
  • Cobb Accessport (stage 2 map)
  • STi rear sway bar
  • STi shocks and springs
  • STi hoodscoop
  • Prodrive P7 wheels w/ STi rubber

How to submit to RR of the Day:
Create a
Flickr account if you don’t already have one. Search for and join the group called ‘Autoblog RR of the Day‘. Upload up to three photos of your ride to your own account at a size no larger than 450 pixels wide if possible and include as much information about it and yourself as possible. Even if your ride is sweet, it will not be chosen if there’s not a lot of info accompanying it. Click on each photo and just above the picture it will say “Send to group”. Click that and select the Autoblog group. You’re done, that’s it!

Alfa 4C Junior: sketches and speculation

With its release date revealed, more speculation has been surfacing on Alfa Romeo’s upcoming Junior sport-hatch.

Pegging itself as the little brother of the sumptuous 8C Competizione, the hot hatch might pick up the name 4C Junior. Sources agree it will be based on the Fiat Grande Punto platform, which means front-wheel-drive, and will likely make use of Alfa’s new Q2 self-locking differential. Power could come from the Fiat group’s new 1.4-liter turbo four pumping out 150 hp, with a more powerful option in Alfa’s 1.8-liter JTB direct injection turbo four producing 220 hp, more than enough to propel the little car like a rocket.

The Alfa Junior is scheduled to hit the road in 2008, so there’s still some time before the final specs are finalized and revealed. And for that matter, whether it will jump the pond together with the 159, Brera and 8C Competizione when Alfa Romeo comes back to American shores.

Follow the link for more sketches.

Spy Shots: 2008 Jeep Liberty

The .38 caliber lenses of KGP have shot another vehicle wide out in the open, and this time the 2008 Jeep Liberty has found itself in the photog’s sights. Caught without any camoflauge, we can clearly see the next Jeep Liberty is going to take its styling cues from the Commander, with very tall, vertical headlights up front flanking that familiar six-bar grille. We can also see that the Liberty embraces the Commander’s boxy shape, giving the entire vehicle a more upright posture and likely increasing interior dimensions in every measure. A longer wheelbase and longer rear overhang are particularly noticeable. Other noticeable changes include the relocation of the spare from the tailgate to under the vehicle, which allows for a rear hatch that lifts vertically instead of swinging out. All of these are benefits that come from the Liberty sharings its platform with the new Dodge Nitro, itself a larger SUV than the current Liberty.

In terms of mechanicals, Allpar.com is guessing both the four-cylinder engine and manual transmission have been dropped, leaving only the 3.7-liter V6 and four-speed automatic to carry the Liberty forward. New electronic nannies also found on the Nitro like ESP with Electronic Roll Mitigation and hill descent control will also likely be available or included on the new Liberty. Finally, the interior is expected to move upmarket with the option for a satellite nav system, rear seat DVD, factory remote start and even the Load ‘n Go cargo slide out system found on the Nitro.

Though we’ve never been a fan of the Commander’s styling, we at least respected it for being a true Jeep that can tackle the Rubicon while banging the heads of seven people on board. We have to say, after introducing the decidedly soft Patriot and Compass models, we can get behind a Liberty that returns to the brand’s tough roots in terms of styling. These no nonsense, slab-sided designs coming out of Jeep may not be a hit on the runways of Rodeo Drive, but their utilitarian style speaks clearly to their intended audience of weekend adventurers.

Three Mercedes-Benz BLUETEC vehicles are on their way

UPDATE: Our man Sam from AutoblogGreen was kind enough to inform us that these new Benz’s are on sale now, however, are only available in 45 states. The E320 is the only vehicle that will come equipped with BLUETEC and urea injection currently, while the others are utilizing a common rail setup. All will come equipped with BLUETEC and urea by 2008.

Hot on the heels of the widespread adoption of new diesel throughout the U.S. last week, Mercedes has announced the impending arrival of three BLUETEC equipped models.

The ML320 CDI SUV, the R320 CDI, tarted-up minivan and the E320 BLUETEC will all come equipped with a three-liter V6 diesel that will make upwards of 200 HP and close to 400 lb.-ft. of torque. Mercedes contends that these new diesels will provide the pull of a V8, yet return mileage numbers comparable to a four-cylinder.

The E320 BLUETEC sedan will chug happily along for over 700 miles before it needs more go juice, returning 40 percent better fuel economy when matched up against a comparably equipped E-series. The ML320 CDI increases its fuel mileage by 28 percent and the R-class will get a 32 percent bump in fuel economy.

These new engines claim to meet the world’s most stringent emissions standards and should begin arriving on U.S. shores soon.

Click on through for MSRP’s on each model, along with the EPA mileage figures.

PRESS RELEASE

MERCEDES-BENZ launches three new diesel-powered models

Quiet, Strong Diesels Power Mercedes-Benz Sedan and Sport Utilities

MONTVALE, N.J. - Today Mercedes-Benz is launching three new models powered by new-generation diesel engines that are impressively quiet, clean and fast. As earlier-technology diesels are disappearing from the U.S. market, Mercedes-Benz is announcing the availability of the ML320 CDI, a mid-size sport utility with a suggested retail price of $ 44,455; the R320 CDI, a six-passenger luxury vehicle priced at $ 44,775; and the E320 BLUTEC, a full-size luxury sedan that begins at $ 52,325 (all three prices include a destination charge of $775).

The new diesel vehicles are powered by an innovative three-liter V6 diesel engine that combines the impressive torque of a V8 engine with the great fuel economy of four-cylinder engines. The new R320 CDI and ML320 CDI make 215 horsepower and 398 lb.-ft. of torque, while the E320 BLUETEC produces 208 and torque of 400 lb.-ft. All three models are fitted with the latest CDI electronic fuel injection, and the E320 BLUETEC features new emission control technology that holds the potential to meet the world’s toughest clean air standards.

Aided by its aerodynamic styling, the E320 BLUETEC boasts a whopping 40 percent better fuel mileage than a comparable gasoline-powered model, and its EPA city/highway rating of 27/37 miles per gallon means the luxury sedan can cruise more than 700 miles on a single tank of fuel. With a city/highway rating of 21/28 mpg, the R320 CDI gets 32 percent better fuel economy, while the ML320 CDI sport utility (rated at 21/27 mpg) provides a 26 percent improvement. Both CDI models have a cruising range of well over 600 miles before refueling.

Fiat reveals release dates for a dozen Alfas, Fiats and Lancias

Typically we get production announcements from manufacturers one model at a time, if not one brand at a time, but the Fiat Group has released their full production schedule for the Lancia, Alfa Romeo and Fiat brands for the next few years.

We’ll get right into the good stuff with the most exciting of the three (and the only one destined for a re-emergence in the North American market): Alfa Romeo. The long awaited 149 has been pushed back again to mid-2009, before which the 147 it replaces will get the Fiat Group’s new 1.4-liter turbo next summer. While waiting for the 149, the Alfa Junior, a sports hatch slotting below it, will hit the roads in mid-2008. A special version of the Alfa Romeo GT called the “Veloce” will arrive next January, and a sportier Ti version of the gorgeous 159 will hit showrooms next February/March.

The Fiat Bravo, shots of which have been floating around the net, will arrive long before the Alfa 149 with which it shares its platform, arriving late next summer. Fiat’s revival of the 500 is due for January ‘08. A new model called the Linea is due next fall, and the Grande Punto will get the 1.4-liter turbo early next summer.

Lastly, Lancia’s new Delta, previewed by the HPE concept in Paris, is scheduled to hit the road early in 2008, a facelifted Musa in fall 2007, and a Sport version of the Ypsillon city-car next spring.

Unfortunately, Fiat didn’t give us a production schedule for Ferrari and Maserati, so we’ll have to wait for the news piece by piece.
