The 2006 ALMS season will wind down next weekend at Laguna Seca, and teams are already looking toward next year’s effort. To that end, Penske Racing and Porsche have made the official announcement that they will once again partner for the 2007 ALMS season. As was the case this year, Penske will field two cars and contest only the ALMS races. Other events, such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans, are out. Penske has already locked up the 2006 LMP2 team championship, while Porsche has clinched both manufacturer’s titles (chassis and engine). Penske/Porsche drivers Sascha Maassen and Lucas Luhr sit 1-2 in the LMP2 driver’s championship standings heading into the final race.

Earlier this month, Porsche unveiled the 2007 RS Spyder, which is more aerodynamic, more powerful, and easier to maintain than the 2006 car. This week, the automaker showed it off in the yellow and red DHL livery that the Penske cars will once again sport next season.

ALMS ‘07 should be enormously entertaining, as the LMP2 class will see Acura join the fray, creating an instant rivalry with Porsche. Add in the independents like Intersport and you’ve got the makings for some compelling drama on the track. One could make a strong case that LMP2, and not the Audi-dominated LMP1, is going to be the class to watch.

Starting next year, the RS Spyder will be available to privateer efforts as well, though it remains to be seen if any other than the Penske duo will contest ALMS. It will be interesting to see if someone decides to independently run one of the Spyders at Le Mans.

So, even though the 2006 American Le Mans Series is wrapping up, there’s no shortage of things to talk about. After the jump, we have a set of galleries that’ll let you compare the 2006 and 2007 cars, as well as a selection of photos of the Penske Spyders contesting their inaugural ALMS season.

PRESS RELEASE:
PENSKE, PORSCHE TOGETHER AGAIN FOR LMP2 IN ‘07

Atlanta - After a successful championship season in 2006, Penske Racing and the Porsche RS Spyder will be back together in 2007 with a two-car effort in the American Le Mans Series’ LMP2 class.

Penske Racing has already clinched the American Le Mans Series team championship in the LMP2 class, and Porsche now owns the manufacturers title for both LMP2 engine and chassis for 2006 - with the Penske/Porsche drivers holding a solid lead for the LMP2 drivers championship going into the last event of the season at Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway on October 21.

Porsche and Penske are expected to fight for the 2007 class championship alongside factory efforts from Acura as well as top-flight independent efforts from Intersport Racing, B-K Motorsports and van der Steur Racing.

This year, Penske Racing has guided the Porsche RS Spyder to nine consecutive class pole positions and six P2 victories this year. The cars also recorded a historic 1-2 overall finish this year at Mid-Ohio.

“We are excited to continue our successful partnership with Porsche as we look ahead to the 2007 American Le Mans Series championship,” said Roger Penske, Chairman, Penske Racing, Inc. “Our immediate focus remains on helping Lucas and Sascha earn the 2006 driver’s championship before we turn our collective attention to the development of the next generation RS Spyder.”

Penske added that the Porsche RS Spyder team will again concentrate exclusively on the American Le Mans Series’ 12-race schedule for 2007 with the goal of winning the LMP2 championship, and will not contest other races or series with the cars including the 24 Hours of Le Mans. He said that the driver lineup for 2007 has not been determined at this time.

Hartmut Kristen, Porsche’s director of worldwide motorsports, is pleased that Penske Racing is back for 2007, and hopes to repeat this year’s success in the coming year.

“Porsche is delighted to renew its relationship with Penske Racing for the 2007 season,” Kristen commented. „Their experience and professionalism contributed greatly to achieving the goals we established going into 2006. Utilizing the next generation of the RS Spyder, we are very optimistic this success will continue next year.”

Unveiled recently at the Paris Motor Show, the 2007 edition of the Porsche RS Spyder promises to be even more formidable than this year’s championship-winning car. For better handling and greater speed, its many changes include enhanced aerodynamics and a more powerful 3.4-liter, V8 engine. In addition the carbon-fiber body has been modified for an even higher standard of ease and convenience for service and maintenance.

The final round of the 2006 American Le Mans Series is the Monterey Sports Car Championships at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca at 2:45 p.m. PDT on Saturday, October 21. SPEED will broadcast the race from 5:30 to 10 p.m. EDT on the same day. MotorsTV will broadcast the race in Europe starting at 10:30 p.m. UTC in England and 11:30 p.m. CET. American Le Mans Radio will have live coverage, and IMSA Live Timing & Scoring will be available at americanlemans.com.

Spyker C8 Spyder Police Car

While American law enforcement agencies use D.A.R.E. cars like the ridiculous BUSTang for parade duty and public relations, their European counterparts redefine the entire concept of one-upmanship with their special vehicles. In Italy, there’s the full-dress Lamborghini Gallardo, while Germany has a TechArt-prepared Porsche 911 Carrera S (photos of both after the jump).

Now you can add the Netherlands to that list, as Dutch supercar manufacturer Spyker created a C8 Spyder with all the proper markings and even a light bar for the Flevoland police. You can check out the story and look at a full photo gallery over at AutoWeek.nl. (You can use this to translate it.)

Audi Q7 gets five stars

The National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently completed testing of Audi’s newest ‘ute and awarded the Q7 five-stars, the highest rating possible, for both front and side crashes. The tests also gave the Q7 a four-star rating for rollover avoidance.

Once again, standard safety equipment reigns supreme, as the Q7 protects its passengers with the required dual-front airbags, but also comes equipped with SideGuard[TM] side-curtain airbags which almost always improve occupant’s safety. Rear-side airbags to protect passengers in the 2nd row are also an option.

To thwart the SUV from going greasy-side-up, Audi employs their trademark Quattro AWD, but also installs their Electronic Stability Program (ESP) with roll over detection.

All this puts our mind at ease, knowing that Erin was well equipped to handle the perils of the world during her recent test drive of the Q7. Whew.

VIDEO: The 10-second MINI

>

Way back in October of last year, you might recall seeing a post about Fireball Tim’s flame surfaced (the paint, not the design) MINI dragster. At the time, the FTR MINI came out to the Los Angeles County Raceway and blew threw the 1,320 in 11.26 seconds with a trap speed of 121.1 MPH. He and his team mused that with a little more tweaking and the right venue, they could bring down their ET well within the ten-second realm. They’ve done just that and have the video to prove it.

Weighing in at one ton and shoveling copious quantities of compressed air into a relatively stock motor, Tim’s team were able to consume the quarter in a scant 10.6 seconds at 128.5 MPH. The M600 continues to carry the destinction of the world’s fastest new MINI and if you haven’t already, be sure to check out Tim’s blog here.

Mitsubishi won’t sell an electric car after all

Our green sibling site was particularly interested in Mitsubishi’s announcement last Monday that revealed their intention to bring an electric car to the U.S. market in the next few years. Some of us were skeptical that a major announcement like that would be given during a dealer’s convention in Las Vegas, but when the President of Mitsubishi says something, we listen.

AutoblogGreen delved deeper into the story and came across this article on CNNMoney’s website that quotes Mitsubishi spokesman Dan Irvin in an email saying, “Please note that contrary to the Automotive News story of earlier this week, there is currently no plan to sell this car in the U.S.”

Okay. So what changed in four days? It’s unlikely that Mitsubishi sat down, did a feasibility study and called it quits. So is it a great leap to think that Mitsubishi’s president, Osamu Masuko knows of a plan, but wasn’t supposed to divulge the information yet, or could it just be chalked up to Sin City’s old mantra of, “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas?”

We’re not sure, but we know we’ve done a few stupid things in the Nevada desert too.

BMW shooting brake in 2008

AutoBild magazine is reporting that BMW may have a “shooting brake” version of the 3-series in the works. The image above is from the cover of their latest issue and it would be safe to say we’re less than impressed with the rendering, but it’s interesting to see the redesigned front fascia that gets a distinct squash and pull. As we’ve learned all too often, these images are rarely a worthwhile indication of future designs.

The idea behind a BMW two-door hatch isn’t entirely bogus, as Audi is looking to offer the same and competition between the two automakers is surely expected. Naturally, we finicky yanks will probably never see it stateside, as the premium hatch market hasn’t boomed to warrant such an offering.

Scion xB Release Series 4.0 coming in November

Scion xB Release Series 4.0

The final Scion limited edition vehicle of the year lands in dealerships next month. The Scion xB Release Series 4.0 gets doused in Maziora Torched Penny paint, a color-shifting finish that changes depending on your viewing angle and/or how light plays off the car’s surface (similar to the Mystichrome finish made available on the 2004 SVT Mustang Cobra) . In this case, the colors morph into shades of brown, bronze, and gold.

The color has been used in Japan already on various show cars and on a JDM special-edition bB, and while the tricky hue clearly won’t be for everyone, it is definitely interesting. We’re sure that Scion will have no trouble finding 2500 takers for the multi-colored miniwagon. In addition to the deluxe paint, the Release Series 4.0 receives some visual aids in the form of a rear spoiler, Modellista grille, and rear bumper protector. Everything’s color-keyed, of course. Inside, the floormats tell the occupants that yes, this is a Release Series Scion. It also gets multicolor dash lighting, a new shift knob (on cars with manual transmissions), and a numbered plaque.

The cost of this brown chameleon is the xB base price, $14,030, plus an additional $1,930 (automatic) or $1,980 (manual).

B&B announces tuning packages for Audi Q7 4.2 TDI

B&B Audi Q7

Gernan tuning house B&B has announced its plans for the forthcoming Q7 4.2 TDI. We’ll be frank: we’ve had a hard time digging up any info on this upcoming Euro-market model, with the only “confirmation” prior to B&B’s release being this thread over at the AudiWorld Forums, in which a Danish user states that he has ordered one and is expecting to take delivery the 14th week of 2007. The 4.2 TDI was previously available in the A8 and produces 326 horsepower in stock trim. (We’ve included the original A8 4.2 TDI press release after the jump to give you more details on the engine.)

Considering the recent news that the Q7 is proving to be more popular in Europe than the automaker had expected, it’s not surprising that they’d add the V8 diesel to the mix, meaning that at some point next year, the snazzy SUV will be available with V6, V8, and V12 TDIs on the other side of the ocean.

This brings us to the B&B tuning package that’s been announced, which serves as a 3rd-party confirmation of the Q7 4.2 TDI’s impending arrival. B&B will offer two levels of tune. Level 1 boosts output to 360 hp / 562 lb-ft, while Level 2 takes it all the way to 380 hp / 590 lb-ft. The company also offers a sport suspension that drops the Q7 50mm, an upgraded exhaust, an aero body kit (shown), plus 22″ and 23″ wheel/tire upgrades.

B&B has tuning kits for the 6-cylinder Q7 TDI available now.

B&B PRESS RELEASE:
The Audi Q7 TDI, optimized from the German tuner B&B, presents itself in a very dynamic version. The V6 3.0 TDI is powered up in level 1 to 275hp / 550Nm and in level 2 up to impressive 300hp and 600Nm torque. This is enough for a speedup of the heavy 3.0 TDI SUV´s under eight seconds up to 100km/h. The top speed of the nobly off-road Audi increases to 230km/h.

The shortly available Audi Q7 with the approved V8 4.2 TDI engine gets from B&B an increase in performance in level 1 onto 360hp / 760Nm and respectable 385hp and 800Nm in level 2. A driving performance on sports car level is expected.

To stabilize the Q7 while increasing driving performance on highways and driving along curves B&B reduces the height of the original air cushion chassis on customers demand by max. 50mm. From combination with the exclusive B&B complete wheels in 22″ and 23″ inch and possible wheel sizes of 315/25-23 results a rate of turn which exceeds those in this car category by far. To meet the risen requirements a 16 parts containing aerodynamic program is as well available and gives the sporting SUV a perfect finish.

ARCHIVE PRESS RELEASE:
Ingolstadt, 2005-05-19
The world’s most powerful diesel-engined car
Audi A8 4.2 TDI quattro

240 kW (326 bhp): With this extremely impressive power output, the new Audi A8 4.2 TDI quattro puts itself ahead of all the other diesel-engined cars on the international market. The entirely redeveloped 4.2-litre, eight-cylinder biturbo engine accelerates the lightweight saloon with its aluminium body from 0 to 100 km/h (0 - 62 mph) in just 5.9 seconds. The top speed is electronically restricted to 250 km/h. In addition to these dynamic qualities, the new power plant displays the kind of refinement that sets standards even in the top segment of the motoring world, and ennobles the A8 4.2 TDI quattro, turning it into the perfect long-distance touring saloon.

The new engine is also exemplary in terms of economy. Combined as standard with quattro permanent four-wheel drive and 6-speed tiptronic transmission, it uses on average just 9.4 litres of diesel fuel for every 100 kilometres. This means it will cover more than 950 kilometres (590 miles) on a full tank without a stop.

The Audi A8 4.2 TDI quattro is equipped as standard with a diesel particulate filter, which works without additives and consequently lasts the lifetime of the vehicle without servicing.

The A8 4.2 quattro has a chassis with air suspension and adaptive damping - otherwise known as Audi adaptive air suspension. It allows the vehicle to be driven either in a decidedly sporty fashion or with an extremely comfortable ride, just as the driver wishes.

Like the other A8 models, the new TDI has the exclusive front end with single-frame radiator grille. The luxury saloon can be ordered from beginning of June either with the standard wheelbase or in its long-wheelbase version, which is 130 millimetres longer. First deliveries will take place in the third quarter of 2005. The basic price of the A8 4.2 TDI quattro in Germany is € 81.000.

The sheer power and the characteristics of this eight-cylinder power unit once again reaffirm the credentials of the Audi A8 as the sportiest saloon car in the luxury segment. And thanks to its top-of-the-range TDI, Audi yet again demonstrates its expertise and its lead in the development of such powerful, refined and, not least, economical diesel engines.

Entirely redesigned engine

The predecessor of the new A8 4.2 TDI had already scored top marks among the luxury-class diesel saloons with its 4-litre, eight-cylinder engine. Thanks to its 275 bhp and 650 Nm of torque, it was the most powerful V8 diesel-engined car for a long period following its debut in the summer of 2003. Its fuel consumption figures of just 9.6 litres per 100 km also earned it a top place among its competitors. With these features the A8 4.0 TDI succeeded in becoming the European number one among the V8 diesel luxury saloons, with a market share of 71 %.

In the light of such statistics, the development goals for the new TDI represented a daunting challenge:

* The most powerful car diesel engine on the market.
* Top figures in terms of driving dynamics, with low fuel consumption
* Optimum engine acoustics
* Low weight
* Compact, short design

In order to implement these specifications, Audi’s TDI development team designed an entirely new engine. Just like the 3.0 and 2.7 TDI before it, the 4.2-litre V8 TDI is a member of Audi’s new family of V-format engines, and has chain-drive for the camshaft and ancillaries.

The cylinder spacing in the new engine block is now 90 millimetres. This gives the engine a compact overall length of just 520 millimetres. One current competitor V8 with the same engine capacity measures all of 140 millimetres more.

The engine block weighing 62 kg altogether is made of vermicular graphite cast iron (GGV) - an important factor in achieving the low engine weight of only 255 kilograms. This is 15 kilograms less than its predecessor, the 4.0 TDI.

The 4.2 TDI is thus one of the lightest V8 diesels ever. This benefits the power-to-weight ratio and the weight distribution in equal measure - two characteristics that are of central importance for the driving dynamics of the new A8 4.2 TDI quattro.

With an engine capacity of 4,134 cc, the combustion chambers of the new engine are almost exactly 0.2 litres bigger than in the case of the 4.0 TDI. The bore has been enlarged by 2 mm compared with its predecessor, to 83 millimetres, and the stroke of 95.5 millimetres is identical with that of the 4.0 TDI. The compression ratio is 16.5 : 1.

The surfaces of the cylinder bores are treated using UV laser exposure. This special honing process ensures significantly reduced oil consumption in the TDI engine, and, as a result, a significant reduction in particulate formation during combustion.

The forged crankshaft made of chrome molybdenum steel is offset in such a way that forces and moments of the first and second order are avoided - a decisive bonus delivering extremely low levels of vibration.

Chain drive for camshaft and ancillaries

The cylinder head is made of aluminium, and two camshafts are used to operate the valves in each. They are driven via a maintenance-free chain drive, which also drives the oil, water and power-assisted steering pumps.

There are four valves per cylinder, for optimum charging of the combustion chamber. The valves on the new V8 are operated by roller cam followers with hydraulic valve clearance compensation. This low-friction drive technique plays a decisive part in reducing both the fuel consumption and the emissions of the 4.2-litre engine.

The use of roller cam followers is likewise beneficial to the engine’s acoustics. In conjunction with the twisted-type and therefore virtually play-free camshaft drive, these followers are instrumental to the reduction in mechanical noise from the valve gear and contribute to the 4.2 TDI’s outstandingly quiet running.

The rigid construction of the engine block and the unit’s effective encapsulation also help to lessen the sound emitted by the eight-cylinder engine.

Biturbo with two intercoolers

A concept that has already proven its worth on the 4.0 TDI engine. Two turbochargers with variable turbine geometry deliver high torque even at low engine speeds, in conjunction with high power output.

Variable turbine geometry means that the flow of exhaust gas to the turbine rotor can be optimised depending on load and engine speed. By means of air mass metering, the engine management ensures that both turbochargers run constantly at the same speed and therefore achieve the same delivery rate. Maximum boost pressure is 2.5 bar; the turbochargers rotate at up to 226,000 revolutions per minute.

The variable turbine geometry is supported by electrically operated actuators on the new 4.2 TDI. These actuators adjust the vanes faster and more precisely: particularly at low engine speeds, this means a more rapid build-up of boost pressure, thus achieving an excellent response.

The 4.2 TDI has two intercoolers, arranged on the right and left in front of the engine. They are ideally positioned in the airflow beneath the headlights, and are therefore capable of operating extremely efficiently.

Each of the two turbochargers serves one bank of cylinders. The two intake manifolds are interconnected by means of a “feedthrough” system, to equalise the pressure between the right and left cylinder banks. This feature boosts cylinder charging and consequently enhances the engine’s output.

There are continuously variable swirl flaps integrated into the intake tract. These permit the air movement to be adjusted to suit the engine speed and load at the time. High tumble at low engine load results in optimised combustion, just as low tumble does at high engine load.

In practice this means that a closed swirl duct at low load increases swirl, while open ducts at high load boost cylinder charging.

Common rail technology with piezo injectors

The Bosch EDC16 CP system, with fuel delivery, trigger-start, boost pressure and exhaust-gas recirculation control, is responsible for engine management on the V8 TDI. As on the A8 with a petrol engine, this electronic system now means that it is possible to start the engine automatically at the push of a button.

Mixture preparation is by means of a latest-generation common rail system. It has a high-pressure pump - located inside the V of the engine - and one pressurized pipe or “rail” for each cylinder bank. The maximum injector pressure is now 1,600 bar, 250 bar more than with previous common-rail systems, a value that corresponds with the weight of a medium-sized saloon on the surface area of a fingernail.

This high injection pressure results in even finer atomisation of the fuel and therefore in better mixture preparation and more efficient combustion. The consequence is not merely extra power and torque, but also reduced fuel consumption and emissions.

The piezo inline injectors are undoubtedly the most important innovation of the new common rail system. Electrically excitable piezo crystals undertake the triggering of the injectors. As soon as a voltage is applied to the crystals,

they contract and, assisted by a hydraulic element, mechanically trigger the opening of the injector needle.

The piezo injectors offer multiple advantages compared with conventional solenoid valves. The moving masses on the injector needles can, for instance, be reduced by no less than 75 percent, from sixteen to four grams in each case.

This enables considerably smaller and more precisely metered injection quantities. At the same time, piezo technology permits a higher injector needle speed. With a value of 1.3 metres per second, the piezo system responds twice as fast as other common rail injectors.

The number of injection processes per combustion cycle can thus be varied almost at will. In the case of the 4.2 V8, the Audi TDI development team decided on up to four injections. In the lower engine speed range there is a double injection in addition to the main injection, and a single pre-injection in the mid-range.

This strategy produces a smoother combustion process, the benefits of which are most immediately apparent in the engine’s acoustic behaviour. The 4.2 TDI engine has once again become significantly quieter and smoother-running, even compared to its already highly cultivated predecessor, and without doubt it sets the benchmark for the class in this discipline.

The fuel is injected into the combustion chamber via eight-hole jets. They too play a major part in making the combustion process ultra-efficient, and thus improving the quality of emissions, by distributing the fuel homogeneously throughout the combustion chamber.

Highly effective exhaust emission control

The 4.2 TDI has a twin-pipe exhaust system with particulate filters as standard. In each exhaust pipe the cleaning of the exhaust gases is undertaken by an oxidising catalytic converter close to the engine and a catalytically coated particulate filter.

The catalytic converter close to the engine ensures adherence to the EU-4 limits by rapidly converting hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide.

The particulate filter, made of silicon carbide with thin-wall technology, is located in the under-floor area. The combination of thin-wall technology and catalytic coating enables controlled regeneration from temperatures of approx. 580 ºC, with simultaneously low exhaust back pressure. This is reflected in only marginally increased fuel consumption and enhanced regeneration efficiency.

The A8 4.2 can cover distances of up to 2,000 kilometres before the filter reaches its maximum charge level. The charge status of the filter is continuously checked by means of monitoring of the exhaust back pressure and parallel simulation calculation for both exhaust pipes separately.

When regeneration becomes necessary, the engine management system generates the required increase in temperature by means of measures taken within the engine and exothermic conversion of unburned hydrocarbons in the oxidising catalytic converter. Up to 5 injections are also possible with the common-rail injection system used at Audi.

Top performance and impressive fuel economy

The 4.2 TDI engine is currently the most powerful diesel engine to be found in any production saloon car. 240 kW (326 bhp) at 3,750 rpm are the new benchmark - an increase of no less than 51 bhp over its 275 bhp predecessor.

The A8 4.2 TDI quattro has the performance of a top athlete. This lightweight luxury saloon with its aluminium body takes only 5.9 seconds to sprint from a standstill to 100 km/h - making it quicker than any other diesel saloon on the international market. It is capable of a governed top speed of 250 km/h.

The torque gives the driver a feeling of pulling power in every speed range that is otherwise only to be experienced in a sports car.

650 Newton-metres between 1,600 and 3,500 rpm - this figure makes the A8 4.2 TDI quattro the Audi with the most torque of them all.

Despite the 51 bhp increase in engine output, the new Audi A8 4.2 TDI quattro consumes no more fuel than its predecessor - quite the opposite,in fact: Average consumption of just 9.4 litres / 100 km means a cut in fuel consumption of 0.2 litres - a figure that is nothing less than sensational!
Audi A8 4.2 TDI quattro: Supreme sportiness

All Audi A8 V8 TDI models are equipped with 6-speed tiptronic transmission with DSP dynamic gearshift programme and additional sports programme. The engine’s output and torque are always unleashed with such precision that the conflicting requirements of spontaneous power flow, high performance and perfectly refined running are all achieved.

Quattro permanent four-wheel drive converts the engine’s performance into superbly effective propulsion and cornering stability, effortlessly and safely converting its enormous torque onto the road. The aluminium Audi Space Frame (ASF) body provides the high-strength basis for low weight, dynamic performance and excellent handling.

The Audi A8 has an aluminium chassis with four-link front suspension and self-tracking trapezoidal-link rear suspension. Adaptive air suspension - an air suspension system with continuous damper control - provides the driving characteristics suitable for every driving situation. It simultaneously reduces body movement, thus optimizing road holding and comfort.

With its combination of a powerful TDI, highly developed lightweight construction and the dynamic qualities of its suspension, the Audi A8 4.2 TDI presents itself as a luxury saloon offering a new level of sporty dynamism and superiority.
