We really don’t know where to begin with this one. We thought we’d seen every conceivable form of motivation, then this comes along and it seems to defy description. The video is courtesy of Streetfire.net, who contends that beneath all that pimperific body work, lives a water-propelled, jet-powered Peugeot 206. Our minds are reeling in an attempt to understand the technical hurdles of such a vehicle. Check the video, then speculate in ‘comments’.

AutoblogGreen for 10.12.06

Diesel was certainly the new black yesterday on AutoblogGreen. From BMW’s announcement it would run two 355d vehicles at the Thunderhill enduro to Alfa’s reemergence to WTCC with diesel to some Texas mesquite biodiesel, the cleaner petroleum fuel was all the rage. And this isn’t even mentioning Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel, which officially starts making its way through the system Oct. 15.

Spy Shots: BMW 3-Series convertible

Some of the clearest images of the 3-series cabrio were released late yesterday and by all outward appearances, there doesn’t seem to be much left to hide, save the taillights and windows.

It’s safe to assume that the same engines available on current coupes will find their way into the folding hard top version, including the new 3-liter turbo. However, rumors have begun to circulate that when the M3 debuts, a convertible will not be an option.

Sources are suggesting that BMW’s entry-level drop top will be available in Europe this coming March, with American sun worshipers getting their chance at open air motoring a few months afterwards.

Ford brings the bling to SEMA

We’ve already reported on GM’s plan to capitalize on the urban trend of throwing dubs on Grandma’s Buick by crashing SEMA with 11 customized Lucernes. Ford intends on bringing their own brand of bling in the form of two custom Edges, a pair of worked-over Lincolns and one turbo’d Fusion.

The Ford Edge pictured above spent a considerable amount of time with the H&R crew and the resulting pimpage is far from subtle. The customized Edge is bathed in Tangerine Orange gloss and fitted with a custom front-fascia that serves as a home to a pair of Hella Celis fog lamps. The hood gets a dose of black paint to give it the boy-racer look, which sets the tone for the both the roof and the 22x10-inch Modern Society wheels. The aggressive stance is courtesy of H&R’s very own Sport Spring kit, equipped with wheel spacers and camber adjustment bolts to bring the body down approximately two inches below stock. The only power mod is the addition of a MagnaFlow cat-back exhaust which gives the prerequisite burble when rolling up to the show stand.

Of the other four vehicles to be debuted, three of which were created by 3dCarbon, with an emphasis on refinement and streetablity and the last, a Fusion, was ‘tuned’ by MRT. Along with the FoMoCo customs, Ford will also have a set of Mustang GT500s and will show their 2008 Ford Super-Duty pickup for the first time. Details on all the vehicles, along with photos are available after the jump.

PRESS RELEASE

The little goblins in Las Vegas this year will be checking out all the cool treats they’ll need to trick out their rides as the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) opens its 2006 show at the convention center there. This year’s theme is “American Muscle,” and Ford Motor Company will deliver its unique brand of American muscle with a large display featuring a host of hot cars and trucks, including a group of special Shelby GT500s and the first show appearance for the new 2008 F-Series Super Duty truck.

Ford Edge by 3dCarbon

The all-new 2007 Ford Edge is designed for the street. Intended for the practical customer who is looking to live on the edge, the 3dCarbon California Crossover Series is all about bold, dynamic styling. The exterior is dressed in an eight-piece 3dCarbon body kit, which includes a front air dam, side skirts, door caps, a rear lower skirt and front fender vents. The interior is trimmed in Katzkin leather and accented by the medium smoke window tint from Sundial Window Tinting. The DVD system plays through Invision Revolution headrest monitors, a Ford-licensed product. An Eibach Springs Pro Kit drops the Edge by 2 inches over a set of NC Forged NC 5 three-piece, 22-inch wheels with floating center caps wrapped in Pirelli Scorpion Zero Asimmetrico tires. Custom DuPont paint and MagnaFlow stainless steel exhaust tips complete the package.

Lincoln MKZ by 3dCarbon

The refined and elegant luxury of the 2007 Lincoln MKZ inspired this 3dCarbon Euro Styling package, which adds a unique touch to Lincoln’s American luxury look. The six-piece kit includes a front air dam, side skirts, a rear lower skirt, an upper deck spoiler and a rear deck spoiler. 3dCarbon also supplies the stainless steel chrome grille. A brushed stainless roof overlay by Quality Metalcraft, side chrome moldings and MagnaFlow stainless steel exhaust tips accent the custom DuPont paint. A light chrome tinted windshield from Sundial Window Tinting adds a soft touch to the Katzkin leather interior, featuring Invision Revolution DVD headrest monitors. The chassis receives new H&R springs and coil-over suspension. Twenty-inch HRE 947R three-piece wheels wear Pirelli P Zero 245/30/20 fronts and 255/30/20 rear tires, accented by Brembo black calipers with drilled rotors.

Lincoln MKX by 3dCarbon

Lincoln’s newest luxury crossover, the 2007 MKX, gets a touch of European flare courtesy of 3dCarbon’s Euro Series body kit. The elegant design exudes the presence of power and luxury sought by the sophisticated buyer. The all-wheel-drive MKX wears a new front air dam, side skirts, door caps and rear lower skirt, bathed in custom DuPont paint. MagnaFlow stainless steel exhaust tips, light chrome window tint from Sundial and 3dCarbon front fender vents add the extra touches of class. The Katzkin interior features Invision Revolution DVD headrest monitors. An H&R Special Sport Springs kit drops the MKX over NC Forged seven-spoke, three-piece, 22-inch wheels with floating center caps wrapped in Pirelli Scorpion Zero Asimmetrico 265/35/22 tires.

Ford Edge by H&R Special Springs (pictured at top)

The 2007 Ford Edge exemplifies energy and the need to hit the open road. The Edge combines the capability of a sport utility vehicle with the driving dynamics of a sports car. H&R Special Springs turns Ford’s new crossover into the ultimate road cruiser, a vehicle that will take you right to the edge. The H&R Edge uses an H&R Sport Spring kit, Triple C camber adjustment bolts and wheel spacers to drop the body by 2 inches over the Modern Society 22-by-10-inch, three-piece wheels wearing Pirelli Scorpion Zero Asimmetrico 305/35WR22 tires. The custom Tangerine Orange paint with Pearl Ghost world graphics is accented by a blacked-out race-look hood, Camtec custom composite front-bumper light pod and Hella Celis lamps with light-emitting-diode halo effect. The 3.5-liter V-6’s special purr comes courtesy of a MagnaFlow cat-back exhaust. The interior wears Wiamea Cliffstone leather seats, door panels and headrests.

Ford Fusion T5 by MRT

The MRT Fusion T5 turns America’s favorite sporty midsize sedan into the ultimate driving machine, integrating a turbocharged all-wheel-drive powertrain, refined handling and awesome style to provide a high-tech driving experience. The 2007 Fusion’s good looks are accented by a 3dCarbon body kit, MRT T5 hood and MRT T5 Black Chrome trim kit. The 3M protective paint film is courtesy of CGM in Detroit. The 3.0-liter V-6 sports a Garrett turbocharger, packaged and tuned by MRT/Precision Turbo and custom calibrated by SCT and Calibrated Success. MRT Aero turbine exhaust completes the powertrain package. Ride and handling have been modified by H&R coil-over springs, struts and shocks. Boss Motorsports 328 Series 20-by-8.5-inch Black Chrome wheels wear Nitto 255/35/20 performance tires. A Stainless Steel Brakes Corp. tri-power brake system provides the stopping power. The interior is trimmed in Woodview accents, and it rocks courtesy of a Rockwood audio system. An MRT onboard driver information system helps keep the driver in touch.

Update on Goodyear Tire strike

The latest news out of Detroit is that automakers might run into some tire shortages should the recent walkout by Goodyear workers continue for more than a few weeks. Adding to that problem was yesterday’s news of an additional 300 hourly workers being laid off at a North Carolina plant, because of the strike. This plant was not one of those on strike, but they produce wire used in the manufacturing of tires at other affected plants. Goodyear plans to bring these workers back when the strikers return.

As we told you last week, 15,000 Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. union workers went on strike after their contract was terminated. The strike has affected 16 North American plants, but Chrysler and GM have both said they had stockpiled a supply in anticipation of the strike. Non-union plants and salaried workers are being used to maintain at least some production. GM has said that it has a 30-day supply of tires on hand, but to put that in perspective, they go through 8 million Goodyear tires every year. Every North American automaker currently uses Goodyear tires.

No new talks are scheduled in this ongoing saga. Goodyear had proposed contract changes that would make the tire manufacturer more competitive by lowering its costs, particularly the costs related to maintaining such a large workforce. Recent notable sore spots like health care and pension funding were at the top of the list of proposed cuts. Worker productivity was sighted in the contract proposals, and the union countered that substantial cuts were already made to wages and other worker’s benefits in 2003, and that further reductions were just plain unacceptable. We’ll keep you updated on who blinks first.

Audi plans to raise prices, brand perception

Audi is getting set to hike its prices up as it makes an attempt to move the brand more upscale and on par with other German luxury marques. In additon to an increase in status, the move should also make some more money for Audi, which has had profitability issues in the past, not the least of which can be attributed by a weak currency exchange.

Some of the ways Audi expects to change its brand perception is to utilize feature film product placement (a la I, Robot), make improvements in its dealer network and massage the Audi brand image overall. As it’s well know that these changes don’t take place overnight, Audi plans to make the transistion over the course of the next five years. The automaker has also hosted “lifestyle” events alongside niche luxury brands like Bang & Olufsen, Ducati and Abercrombie & Kent. The company is also planning on constructing several high-end showrooms, much like the Audi Forum that debuted in New York yesterday.

All these efforts will help Audi reach its goal of breaking the 100,000 unit mark in 2008.

Spy Shots: 2008 Mazda Tribute

The next Mazda Tribute has been captured by the long lense of KGP Photography during some late-stage testing that affords us an uninhibited view of the next ZUV (Zoom Utility Vehicle) from Mazda. Clearly the overall shape of the Tribute’s sister ute, the new 2008 Mercury Mariner, remains, but Mazda’s version has a different front end that’s decidely less adorned with filigree and chrome. In fact, it’s downright staid next to the new Mariner and reminds us a little of the Honda Pilot, if only for its lack of interesting angles. But hey, some people like vanilla, we just don’t usually expect that flavor from Mazda. It’d be nice if Mazda actually did inject the Tribute with a bit of sporting flair in the form of, say, a sport version carrying the turbo-four that appears in the new CX-7, but we aren’t holding our breath. And just as Ford must deal with Edge and Escape sales cannibalizing each other, Mazda will likely face the same thing with CX-7 and Tribute sales. This leads us to believe that both the Escape and Tribute will likely be positioned as more utilitarian and dutiful than their brand new brethren. Seeing as how the new Mercury Mariner has already debuted, the new Tribute from Mazda shouldn’t be far behind. We should it see it at the L.A. Auto Show in November, if not sooner.

Build a better iDrive, get $5m in venture capital

From CNN Money’s Business 2.0 Magazine, we’ve learned of a proposal that is anything but indecent. Business 2.0 asked several venture capitalists what projects they would like to fund. Knowing this can be a touchy subject, they were pleasantly surprised to get some of the VCs to divulge their pet projects. The result is an interesting list of 20 business ideas, including websites, applications, batteries and even a luxury housing development. The one that naturally caught our “i” was a call for a next generation iDrive type computer interface that would utilize a heads-up display system. If you think you can build a better mouselesstrap, there could be a cool $5 mil in it for you and your team.

Investors Jonathan Fram and Howard Schultz, of Maveron, are willing to part with five million dollars for an “in-dash computer with a keyboard built into the steering wheel and a full-screen heads-up display projected on the windshield.” The technology behind the system, laser or cathode-ray tubes that convert pixels into projected light, has been around for 30 years. Jet fighter pilots use it to read cockpit data without taking their eyes off the road sky. Commercial pilots use it too, and automakers have tried it with mixed results.

Projected displays don’t distract drivers as much as cell phones or dashboard controls, and research has shown that our eyes can handle projected displays and the road much easier than refocusing between the road and the dashboard. Fram and Schultz (who helped create Starbucks) think that with the increasing technological needs of today’s drivers and the obvious safety advantage of not having to take your eyes off the road, there is enough of a market for a functional system that $5 million is just a drop in the bucket. If you think you have a “deeply qualified 20-person team” that can deliver a prototype, as well as a plan to promote a commercial version to automakers in the next three years, the $5 million could be yours. Follow the read link for details.

POLL Results: RR of the Week

Filed under:

Damn! This is the first time we’ve been late in our Reader Ride duties, as you should’ve seen this post sometime on Monday, and we’re beatin’ ourselves up over it, really. Then again, it was pretty clear as soon as this week’s RR of the Week poll began that the 1966 Porsche 912 would be in the winner’s circle, and so it is. Said Porsche received 786 votes (42%), or more than double the car that got my vote, a 1986 Chrysler 5th Avenue on steroids that garnered 344 votes (19%). The remaining three cars were very close in the voting, with the autocrossing 1999 Honda Civic EX Coupe getting 262 votes (14%), the 1988 Jeep Cherokee named “Blowby” attracting 239 votes (13%), and finally the Final 500 2003 Oldsmobile Aurora receiving 220 votes (12%).

MADD’s new DWI awareness posters are a smash

MADD poster

Above is one of a new series of posters created for MADD Canada by their marketing agency partner, Calder Bateman Communications, to promote the organization’s anti-drunk-driving message. It’s one of the most effective campaigns we’ve ever seen. The posters feature one of three vehicles, each of which has a busted-up windshield and leaves long skidmarks in its wake. The cars themselves are intact when the posters are completely flat, but when they’re taped up against a static object like the towel dispenser shown, the message becomes abundantly clear.

You see, when you crumple the bottom part of the poster, the car looks like a real wreck. It’s a simple, brilliant, and attention-getting way to communicate just how irresponsible and dangerous it is to get behind the wheel after you’ve been drinking.
