RR of the Day: 2005 Lotus Elise

October 11, 2006

For today’s RR of the Day we could have waxed poetic about the joys of the Elise for several paragraphs, but honestly, what more needs to be said about the feather-weight Lotus? Know the 1.8-liter, 190-hp, mid-mounted four. Understand Colin Chapman’s obsession with speed through lightweight. Love the undisturbed connection between man and machine.

It’s four-wheeled beauty personified and if you haven’t had the chance to get behind the wheel of one yet, do so by any legal means necessary.

This particular example is owned by Flickr member Fleur-Designs, who already knows the Elise is a head-turner, but decided to opt for the retina-scalding Krypton Green to cause bouts of whiplash among pedestrians in Louisville, Kentucky.

If you’d like to see your own ride featured here, simply upload photos of your ride into our Flickr group. We select one image to highlight each week day, and on the weekend let you vote for the RR of the Week. Detailed instructions can be found after the jump.

How to submit to RR of the Day:
Create a
Flickr account if you don’t already have one. Search for and join the group called ‘Autoblog RR of the Day‘. Upload up to three photos of your ride to your own account at a size no larger than 450 pixels wide if possible and include as much information about it and yourself as possible. Even if your ride is sweet, it will not be chosen if there’s not a lot of info accompanying it. Click on each photo and just above the picture it will say “Send to group”. Click that and select the Autoblog group. You’re done, that’s it!

It’s Job Fair Day at FoMoCo!

It’s not usually a good sign when your boss starts talking to you about what you want to do with the rest of your life. If they start leaving the help wanted classifieds on your desk, things are really getting bad. If they actually bring in a number of other employers to recruit amongst their workers, it must be Ford’s Way Forward Plan in overdrive. That’s exactly what Ford did yesterday in Norfolk, by hosting its first Opportunity Workshops and Opportunity Fairs. The goal of the workshops is to help hourly workers find the best buyout package for their particular situation.

And let’s not forget, this is a workforce of 75,000 people we’re talking about. Between Oct. 16, and Nov. 27, workers need to select one of eight different retirement, education or other “separation” programs. The specific details about each of these programs come after the jump, but some of the biggest ones include tuition reimbursement for a two- or four-year college degree, a $100,000 lump sum payment or $35,000 retirement incentive.

Besides the workshops that will help explain each program, nearly 75 local employers, colleges and universities will be on hand at the Norfolk Assembly Plant today for the first Opportunity Fair, as well. They will be able to provide info, answer questions and sign up interested employees. Some of the organizations expected to turn out are Norfolk State University, ITT Technical Institute, Hampton Fire Department, Norfolk Southern Railroad, Old Dominion University, Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office, Fantastic Sams and Smithfield Foods, among others.

FORD HELPS U.S. HOURLY EMPLOYEES WITH CAREER TRANSITION AND EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

NORFOLK, Va., Oct. 10, 2006 - Ford Motor Company [NYSE: F] is taking an important step in the acceleration of its Way Forward plan in Norfolk today by holding the first in a series of employee Opportunity Workshops and Opportunity Fairs, intended to help hourly employees determine which available buyout package is right for them.

Ford is offering buyout packages to its entire U.S. hourly workforce, approximately 75,000 people. Employees have between Oct. 16, and Nov. 27, to select among eight different retirement, education and other separation programs. The programs include tuition reimbursement for a two- or four-year college degree, a $100,000 lump sum payment or $35,000 retirement incentive, among others (see below for additional details of each).

“Though we are doing what we must to fix our business in North America, we truly have the best interests of our employees in mind,” said Marty Mulloy, Ford Motor Company vice president, Labor Affairs. “We are providing a wide variety of buyout options for employees to consider, and we are committed to providing them with as much information as possible to help them through the process of transitioning into their lives after Ford.”

In an effort to help employees through their decision-making process and to provide relevant information about their options, Ford and the UAW are holding Opportunity Workshops and Opportunity Fairs at nearly every manufacturing location in the United States. The workshops are designed to provide information about topics including how to start a business, going through a relocation and going back to school. The Norfolk Opportunity Workshop is being held today at the local union hall and is open to all Ford Motor Company employees.

In addition, approximately 75 local employers, colleges and universities and franchise companies will set up booths at Norfolk Assembly Plant for an Opportunity Fair tomorrow, to provide information, answer questions and potentially recruit interested employees. Specifically, the Norfolk fair will include representatives from Norfolk State University, ITT Technical Institute, Hampton Fire Department, Norfolk Southern Railroad, Old Dominion University, Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office, Fantastic Sams and Smithfield Foods, among many others.

Employees who accept packages will leave the company between January and September 2007. Plans are in place ensure smooth transitions upon employee departures.

Brit team plans to break record with 200mph head of steam

We never suspected the Brits would use boiling water for anything nobler than steeping tea, but it’s full steam ahead for the British Steam Car Challenge project that is attempting to break the land-speed record for a steam-powered vehicle that has stood for over 100 years. According to a Telegraph article, a small group of would-be record breakers will head to South Africa’s Northern Cape early next year where they will try to achieve 200mph in their steam-powere car, thus shattering the previous record 127.659mph that was set in 1906 by Fred Marriot’s Stanley Steamer. A man named Bob Barber actually surpassed that mark in 1985 by clocking a 145.607mph pass, but then his steam-powered car burned to the ground. He was therefore unable to complete a return run, which is required by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) to qualify for a land speed record.

The British Steam Car Challenge started seven years ago when Lord Montagu of Beaulieu was invited to view a student project at Southampton University. His nephew, Charles Burnett III, was moved enough by the project that he assembled a team of experts including Dr. Glynne Bowsher, designer of the current outright land speed record holder, Thrust SSC. Expectations are high, even if the budget isn’t.

Project engineer Frank Swanston: “There is no official British record, so whatever speed we achieve during tests at Bruntingthorpe airfield in Leicestershire early next year will stand. Next, we want to set a world land speed record of 200mph in South Africa, then follow that in August by breaking Barber’s American national record during Bonneville Speed Week, at 150mph.”

The 320-hp steam turbine car will alternately be driven by Burnett and Annette Getty, general manager of PDS, the builder of the Inspiration’s tubular steel chassis. Although she has no experience with lsr cars, she is currently campaigning an Evo in local rallies: “I imagine it is going to be very quick, hot and cramped…, but I don’t frighten easily” Although the FIA doesn’t acknowledge gender specific records, Annette thinks her efforts should be good enough for the Guinness Book of Records. The team still needs to find a further £250,000 to complete the challenge. For more information about the British Steam Car Challenge, check out www.steamcar.co.uk.

So what’s better than spy photos of the latest and greatest high-performance German iron aluminum and carbon fiber? Video, natch. Thankfully, the camera-wielding purveyor of Autoholic shot some video of the BMW E92 M3, Porsche GT2, CLK DTM Black edition and the Audi R8 doing what they do best: consuming copious quantities of the Green Hell’s spray-painted tarmac. Enjoy and try to figure out what the very last vehicle in the video is. We’re not entirely sure.

VIDEO: First look at Acura’s ALMS LMP2 racer

>

We just received word of this video clip showing the new Acura LMP2 ALMS racer. It was filmed at the racecar’s unveiling during the 2006 Petit Le Mans. Besides showing off the car, Acura announced the drivers of the Lowe’s car, Adrian Fernandez and Luis Diaz. The video shows the press conference cut in with images of the car. As we’ve previously reported, this car represents Acura’s first foray into motorsports in the company’s 20 year history and testing has already begun at Firebird International Raceway in Arizona. The Lowe’s Fernandez team has fitted the brand new LM V8 engine into a Lola B05/40 chassis for the test by owner/driver Adrian Fernandez.

The racing debut of the three Acura ALMS teams will come at Sebring in March, with Andretti Green Racing and Highcroft Racing joining Lowe’s/Fernandez. Highcroft will run an Acura-Courage LC75, as Honda develops its own chassis for the 2008 season. Andretti Green is also running a Courage, with XM Satellite Radio sponsorship carrying over from their IRL effort. Highcroft Racing is the only one of the three teams currently running in the ALMS, competing in LMP1 with its Lola EX257-AER.

The car looks pretty impressive, but with Porsche being so strong this year in LMP2, it will take a lot of work for Acura to establish itself as a contender. ALMS seems to be getting more attention, as it deserves and it will hopefully continue to grow, attract sponsors and fans. The rumors of a possible Mario/Michael/Marco Andretti driver lineup can only help towards that goal.

Ferrari develops 4WD system

According to an article in Italiaspeed, it seems you may be able to equip your next prancing horse with all-wheel-drive.

What’s being called “insertable 4x4″ can be equipped in both Ferrari’s mid-engine and front-engine vehicles and will only be activated if the computer senses a loss of traction. However, unlike systems utilized by Lamborghini, Ferrari drivers can choose between traditional rear-wheel- and the four-wheel-drive when and where they wish.

The new system functions much like a conventional gearbox, however, a secondary clutch is joined to the crankshaft, which will only be engaged when the system detects a slide or excessive wheel-spin. When it does, power will be sent to the front wheels to right the vehicle. According to the article, the system works very well, however the all-wheel-drive system can only be active for a short amount of time at high speeds, as mechanisms in the system are prone to overheating. Whether or not this problem will carry through to the production models was not addressed in the article.

When it comes to outright traction, all-wheel-drive is clearly the dominating drive train, however, with the additional weight and complexity of the system, we hope that Ferrari is willing to take the inevitable flack that will come from their core clientele of drive train traditionalists.

Nissan 350Z GT-S is coming (to the UK)!

When a few rogue Nissan engineers in Britain decided to mount a supercharger onto the 350Z and debut it at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, we knew it was trick, but we also assumed it would never find its way to production. We stand corrected.

AutoExpress’ sources inside Nissan have confirmed that the 350Z GT-S will be produced and be priced at £36,000.

The GT-S version will come equipped with the aforementioned supercharger, complete with dash-mounted toggle switch that will allow the driver to ‘turn-off’ the supercharger and return the 3.5-liter V6 back to its normal output (for a reason that totally escapes us). The version that debuted at Goodwood was producing 382 HP and 313 ft.-lbs. of torque and was able to leave naught and arrive at 60 in 4.8 seconds. Beyond the power figures and the information we knew before (linked below) it is unclear as to what other features will make it on this limited edition coupe. We can only hope that the bodywork and butterfly valve-equipped exhaust are included on the invoice.

Since the original purpose of the endeavor was to make a meaner, yet streetable version of the Z, in hindsight, it seems only natural that it would find its way onto the streets. However, the tarmac the GT-S will grace are across the pond, so once again we’re elated for a few moments, then pissed for the rest of the day.

Ford recalling 145,000 vehicles in the U.S.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Ford will be recalling close to 140,000 Five Hundreds and Mercury Montegos, along with over six thousand Hybrid Escapes.

The cause of the recall on the Five Hundred and its Mercury stable mate is a faulty door latch that may allow water to enter the mechanism and, if the water freezes, could cause the door to open while the sedan is in motion. The recall will affect 2005-2006 model year vehicles.

On 2006 Escape Hybrids, Ford has found that the drivetrain shaft could fracture and, in turn, may cause the vehicle to move even if the ‘ute is in the ‘Park’ position.

Ford dealers are instructed to inspect and replace the part if it’s necessary.

The Dealer Rumor Mill: Dodge Avenger due in February

The Detroit News is quoting dealers who say that the Dodge Avenger will begin production in January and should hit dealer lots by February. When the newspaper contacted Chrysler to confirm the information, Dave Elshoff, a Chrysler spokesman replied, “We haven’t announced any plans to build the Dodge Avenger.”

So there you have it. Dodge dealers say it’s a go and Chrysler P.R. says ‘no.’ Whatever. We all know that the Avenger will see production; it’s all just a matter of when and where.

The Avenger is expected to bring new buyers into the Dodge fold, as its relatively aggressive styling is the antithesis of other vehicles competing in the segment. The design cues shared by its larger sibling, the Charger, are more than obvious, and if Chrysler can equip the sedan at a competitive price, with all the features buyers expect, it may be able to pull its car sales out of the doldrums (down 10.6 percent for the year). Considering how poorly the Stratus is doing (down 37.8 percent for the year), it looks like things could only get better.
