Saturn and Opel to be indistinguishable by 2014

October 6, 2006

Ward”s Auto is reporting that General Motors has begun a plan to completely integrate Saturn and its European Opel brand by 2014. By that time, nearly every car in the lineup of each brand will be “interchangeable,” according to Carl-Peter Forster, president of GM Europe. Forster likens what will become of Saturn to Vauxhall, the retail channel for Opel in the United Kingdom. The Saturn Aura already rides on the same Epsilon platform as the Opel Vectra, but both cars were developed separately, feature different content and are built in different locations. The next Vectra, however, will be the basis for the second-generation Aura sold in the U.S. Both the Opel Antara SUV and the Astra compact will also be coming to the States soon as the next VUE and ION replacement, respectively. The smallest Opel, the newly redesigned Corsa (shown above), could also come over as a Saturn if GM believes it needs another entry-level option alongside the Chevy Aveo in the U.S. The only thing Saturn has to offer Opel is the Sky roadster. The Sky will be sold in Europe as the Opel GT early next year. Aside from that, Opel”s European customers probably aren”t interested in the upcoming 7-passenger Saturn Outlook, as the CUV is much too large for their tastes. [Source: Ward”s Auto]

More details on new Dino from Ferrari

What we wouldn”t give to have a somewhat more affordable new Ferrari available in dealerships today. Something at maybe half the current price of an F430. Something that can get by with only 300 hp. Something that is lighter and more nimble but still has the style and visceral appeal of the legendary marque from Maranello. Something like a modern day Ferrari Dino. Mid-engine, smaller high-revving V-8, sexy bodywork. We”ve speculated a bit about it in the past and have offered up reasons why Ferrari should build it, even suggested platforms and design parameters, but so far no response from Luca. (additional info and an alternative design concept after the jump) [Source: AutoBild via Motor Authority] Although we have heard the project is dead (if it was ever indeed being seriously considered), it never hurts to dream. And rumors persist. The latest AutoBild, in fact, has a cover illustration of a possible direction this project might head if it indeed gets greenlighted. Looks more like a BMW Z4 or scaled down 599 than what we might have hoped for, but anything new on this front is a good sign. This particular rendering looks to be a front-engined 2 seater, likely with a folding metal roof, but a mid-engine platform to go up against the Boxster/Cayman and Elise/Exige would be more to our liking. Although the AutoBild shot isn”t particularly beautiful, a front-engined Dino could work, and might be possible on the Alfa 8C platform as well. And if that beauty doesn”t stir your soul, I hate to break it to you, but you are dead my friend. Likely based on the new 8C/Maserati Coupe platform, the 4.2 liter V-8 would be the most logical powerplant, but a high-revving new V-6 might find its way into the engine bay as well. Nice, but we”d still prefer something closer to what Dutch designer Michiel van den Brink has offered. He is the designer who recently brought us the GTO concept based on either a Maranello or Fiorano platform, that we drooled over a week or so ago.

Everything’s O-Kei: New Daihatsu Move introduced in Japan

Daihatsu Move Custom Another day. Another kei. This time, it”s Daihatsu, which has released a redesigned version of its Move minicar. Available as the subdued Move or the more sporty-looking Move Custom (above), the car follows the usual kei formula: tiny outside, maximized space inside. In fact, the new Move boasts the longest cabin length and width available in a Japanese minicar. The Move”s softer lines appear to be geared more towards women, while the Move Custom has a more masculine flavor to it. Incidentally, this appears to be the case with almost every kei car. Two versions, one soft, one sporty, with the sporty version offering an optional turbocharged engine. The same holds true here. The Move and Move custom are both available with a 660cc normally-aspirated engine putting out around 58 horsepower and getting 54 mpg peak fuel economy. The Move Custom can also be had with a 660cc turbo that nets an additional 6 horses or so. All models are available with either 2WD or 4WD, and transmission choices include a 5-speed manual, 4-speed auto, or CVT depending on the individual trim level selected. (Photos, press release after the jump) Daihatsu Move: Daihatsu Move Custom: PRESS RELEASE: Daihatsu Launches Fully Redesigned MOVE DAIHATSU MOTOR CO., LTD. (Daihatsu) announced the launch in Japan of the fully redesigned mini vehicle MOVE on October 5. The redesigned MOVE has been completely updated from the platform to the engine and developed with the aim of evolving on a new level that transcends its class. Two models have been created, the MOVE, based on the concept of “my energetic and versatile,” and the MOVE Custom, which is based on the concept of “quality and mobile amenity.” The new MOVE offers the following features: 1) New styling that effects dramatic change to a refined and dynamic silhouette; 2) Advanced packaging that creates the longest cabin length and width in a mini vehicle; 3) A high-quality interior that provides a relaxing feel like that of a lounge; 4) Enhanced vehicle performance achieved through the combination of cutting-edge technologies;
  • A KF-VE type non-turbo engine and a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) provide superior acceleration performance and high fuel efficiency of 23km/liter
  • High-quality, comfortable ride and remarkable cabin quietness
  • All vehicles fitted with the KF-VE type engine qualify for incentives under the Japanese government”s “green” taxation system that provides incentives to owners of both of low emission and low pollution vehicles.
  • Advanced preventive safety features realize high safety performance levels
5) Features such as door mirrors that are linked to the reverse gear realize a high level of utility that make you want to drive the MOVE. * As of September, 2006; measured by Daihatsu Plans call for sales of 12,000 units per month in Japan. The manufacturer”s suggested retail prices range from 970,000 yen to 1,595,000 yen (excluding consumption tax). The photo shows MOVE X and MOVE Custom RS (2WD).

NHTSA makes Toyota modify seat latch recall

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration continues to dog Toyota over a recall involving 157,000 Tundra Access Cab pickups sold between 2003 and 2005. The vehicles in question violate a 2002 NHTSA rule that requires vehicles with air bag shut off switches to have special latches in the front seats for child safety seats, which these trucks don”t. Toyota asked for an exemption from the rule and was denied, at which point it decided to issue a recall to disable the air bag shut off switches and affix a new warning label that recommended parents place child safety seats in the back seat. Toyota went this way because engineering new child safety seat latches for the front passenger seat of the Tundra would be extremely expensive and difficult. The NHTSA decided that disabling the airbag shut off switch would confuse owners, so now Toyota is forced to start over. This time the automaker will be sending a letter to all affected Tundra owners that explains the problem and urges owners to put children in the back seat. The letter will also inform owners that if they want new child safety seat latches in the front seats, they can request them from Toyota, which will retrofit fit them as soon as it figures out how to. Get a Blower Bentley for $32.00

Blower the Bentley Think you need to have a stock portfolio with an 8- or 9-digit value to own a Blower Bentley? Think again! For the entirely manageable sum of £16.98 (approx. $32 USD), you can get yourself Blower, the plush Bentley from the Bentley Collection. The friendly-looking racer”s wheels are even removable to facilitate “bedside repairs,” according to the website. Of course, with kids, “removable” is a euphemism for “loseable,” so if you bring home Blower, make sure you keep track of his rolling stock. The last thing he needs is the ignominy of being laid up on a set of Lego jackstands because his wheels are missing. Blower hates that. [Source: Luxist]

Forbes ranks Top 10 video games for drivers

We may not be able to afford exotic cars in real life, but for decades gearheads the world over have embraced video games as a way to unleash their inner Schumacher. Jeremy Rosenberg at ForbesAutos.com (OK, Forbes isn”t an obvious choice for a video game survey, but what the heck, at least some Forbes readers can actually afford to buy these cars…) has examined the historical spectrum of driving games, ranging from arcade classics to the current state of the art, and come up with an all-time Top Ten list:
  1. Gran Turismo 4
  2. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
  3. OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast
  4. Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed
  5. Spy Hunter
  6. Project Gotham Racing 3
  7. Sega GT 2002
  8. Test Drive Unlimited
  9. Pole Position
  10. The Fast and the Furious
GT4, not surprisingly, hits the top of the chart for its uncompromising approach to realism in the driving simulator genre. (Of course, as with most games sponsored by automakers, that realism doesn”t extend to crash damage.) You may not agree with Forbes” choices and ranking, but with Sony”s much-anticipated PlayStation 3 launching next month, the list might get you thinking about a new driving game to showcase the next-gen platform. Or maybe you”ll just grab a roll of quarters and head for the arcade. [Source: ForbesAutos.com]

AutoblogGreen for 10.06.06

Yesterday, AutoblogGreen revisited a few evergreen ecological debates. Is it better to throw things away and start over with new, cleaner technology (Ford”s lightbulbs)? Does new technology carry with it too much damaging R&R waste to make it worthwhile (Hummer vs. Prius)? Should cops be riding around on stand-up tricycle (the T3)? Ok, that last one isn”t commonly debated in green circles. But if more police started using the 25mph Segway-ish trikes, maybe someday it will.

Honda recalls 270,000 vehicles in Japan and elsewhere

Honda announced yesterday that they would recall 270,000 vehicles throughout Japan and China. The two vehicles affected by the recall are the Odyssey minivan and Life kei car. In the case of the Odyssey, a problematic electrical circuit in the windshield wiper unit has resulted in two minivans catching fire. Of the approximately 117,000 affected Odysseys, 85,000 are in Japan and the rest are spread throughout China, Australia and New Zealand. The Life kei car (pictured) is also suffering from electrical maladies that can cause the engine to shut down suddenly. So far 104 cases of engine failure have been reported and Honda is expecting to recall 153,000 examples of the popular city car. [Source: Today Online]

New standards for heavy-duty diesels means more problems

Those looking for a glimpse into the future of light-duty diesel reliability may be interested in a new study by J.D. Power on customer satisfaction with modern heavy truck powertrains. The 2006 Heavy Duty Truck Engine/Transmission Study ranked engines from the 2004 model year by quality, performance, cost of ownership, and warranty, and revealed what one would reasonably expect from new technology.

An average of 74 problems per 100 vehicles was reported, which represents a 60% increase in trouble over the prior year. This was attributed directly to the emission control systems that were phased in during 2003 and 2004. Fuel economy also declined from 6.04 MPG in the 2004 study to 5.72 MPG - a drop of over 5%. Ranked highest in the study was Caterpillar, and the company”s ACERT technology allowed the C12 and C15 (pictured above) to lead the ratings of individual engines. Unfortunately, unless you hold a CDL, it”s highly unlikely that either one of them will find their way into your personal fleet.

So, what does this mean for consumers of passenger vehicles? Just as we”ve experienced the evolution of emission controls on gasoline engines, problems can be expected as manufacturers roll out clean diesel technology. How long it will take to sort out these issues is not yet clear, but we”re guessing that things get sorted out rather quickly, and indeed some of the problems that are currently affecting heavy trucks may very well be eliminated before it trickles down to smaller oilburners.

J.D. Power and Associates Reports: Problems with Heavy-Duty Truck Engines Increase as More Manufacturers Employ New Emission Standards

The Caterpillar C-12 Ranks Highest in Customer Satisfaction with Vocational Heavy-Duty Diesel Engines

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif.: 5 October 2006 -As manufacturers of heavy-duty truck engines strive to meet government-regulated emission standards by implementing new emission technologies, customers are increasingly experiencing problems with their engines, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 Heavy-Duty Truck Engine/Transmission StudySM released today.

The study, now in its 10th year, measures customer satisfaction with the engines in two-year-old heavy-duty trucks (Class 8) by examining four vital engine factors. They are (in order of importance): engine quality (30%); engine performance (26%); engine cost of ownership (22%); and engine warranty (22%). The study examines engines supplied in 2004 model-year trucks, the second model year impacted by the Consent Decree that raised diesel engine emission standards.

To meet emission regulations, manufacturers are continuously redesigning engines and employing new technologies, such as redirecting exhaust gas back into the engine to burn off more pollutants. Consequently, the average number of reported engine problems has increased to 74 PP100 (engine problems per 100 vehicles)-up from 46 PP100 in 2005.

“In the 2005 study, there was a greater mix of manufacturers using old- and new-technology engines, so we”re just now starting to see the overall impact of the emission regulations,” said Brian Etchells, senior research manager in the commercial vehicle group at J.D. Power and Associates. “Whenever a new technology is employed, it takes a while to work the bugs out. As time goes on and engines are better equipped and designed to follow the emission standards, the number of problems should gradually decline.”

For the sixth year, a Caterpillar engine ranks highest in the vocational segment. Vocational trucks are defined as those with body types used in rugged job applications, such as dump trucks, concrete mixers, and garbage/refuse recycling trucks. The Caterpillar C-12 ranks highest among vocational heavy-duty truck engine models, performing particularly well in three of the four factors that determine overall satisfaction: engine quality, performance and cost of ownership. The Caterpillar C-15 follows the C-12 in the rankings.

“Caterpillar in particular has done an excellent job in meeting the challenge of the new emission standards by creating their own innovative emission technology,” said Etchells. “Caterpillar”s success is clearly evident in how satisfied customers are with their engines.”

The study also finds that among the four drivers of engine satisfaction, customers are least satisfied with the cost of ownership, particularly in the areas of routine engine maintenance costs and fuel efficiency. Reported fuel consumption for heavy-duty engines has declined to 5.72 mpg in 2006-down from 5.91 mpg in 2005 and 6.04 mpg in 2004.

The 2006 Heavy-Duty Truck Engine/Transmission Study is based on the responses of 2,529 primary maintainers of two-year-old heavy-duty trucks (Class 8) .

H2 factory shuts the line down for two weeks

GM has recognized that dealers are suffering from a severe glut of H2s on their lots and has determined that the best way to avoid adding to the over-supply problem is to cease production at its Mishawaka, Indiana plant. This is not the first time that GM has made course corrections in the production of the Tahoe-based Hummer. Back in January of this year, the automaker transferred 170 employees off the line and into another plant to make up for shortfalls in H2 sales. Currently, the Mishawaka plant only has 600 employees, down from the 1,000 that it normally utilizes at full tilt boogie. [Source: Freep]
