Toyota to cut hybrid weight and cost by 2009

October 4, 2006

When it comes to saving cash at the pump, one of the best ways to improve fuel economy is to avoid lugging around unnecessary pounds. We”ve already lost a few odd ounces when we replaced our CDs for an MP3 player, and when gas prices begin to rise again, it might be a good time to consider that diet you”ve been putting off. Toyota has the same idea for their hybrid vehicles, so when the next generation Prius rolls of the line, its hybrid drivetrain will have its weight cut in half. The automaker is in a race with Honda to significantly reduce the weight of these systems, and in doing so, will also reduce the cost of the vehicle overall. It”s estimated that the current Prius has a price penalty of about $4,000 dollars due to its gas/electric setup. ToMoCo wants to bring that figure down to about $1,900 and plans to do so within the next three years. The same goes for Honda, who intends on only charging a $1,700 premium for its hybrid-equipped whips by 2009. [Source: Financial Times via Inside Line]

NADA identifies increased interest in crossovers

The automotive information site NADAguides.com has seen a significant up tick in consumer interest towards crossovers or, if you prefer, CUVs. Beginning in January and ending at the end of August of this year, NADA claims to have seen a 37 percent increase in research traffic for CUVs and other smaller utility vehicles. The NADA list of the most researched vehicles is: 1. Toyota RAV4 2. Ford Escape 3. Toyota Highlander 4. Saturn VUE 5. Nissan Murano 6. Dodge Caliber However, when we think of CUVs, we envision vehicles like the Enclave (pictured), the Ford Freestyle and other middle ground, five-doors of that ilk. Those vehicles are new designs, specifically geared towards consumers stepping out of their SUVs and into a smaller, yet still practical, means of transportation. The RAV4, Escape, VUE and Murano, don”t strike us as the revolutionary hope that crossovers are perceived to be. We”ve always considered them cute “utes or soft-roaders. Maybe the definition of crossover is too broadly defined, with anything falling in between an Accord and an Expedition adopting the moniker. The Dodge Caliber, which NADA identifies as the most researched model in August, is supposedly a replacement for the compact Neon. But as anyone who”s seen or driven a Caliber can attest, it is hardly compact. The amount of research obviously shows that Dodge has a hit on their hands, but is it really a crossover, or just another wagon? We”d like your thoughts on the crossover market and what you believe a crossover is defined as. The “comments” sections is open and your two pence are desired. [Source: The Auto Channel]

Reports: Villeneuve signed NASCAR deal with Roush

It”s surely a credit to stock car racing that F1 drivers have been migrating to NASCAR. In the new parody movie Talladega Nights, it seems like a joke that the antagonist (pictured) is a French F1 driver come over to America to race stock cars, but that”s looking less and less like a joke as it becomes reality.

McLaren recently released its departing driver Juan Pablo Montoya from his contract early so he can begin testing stock cars. And the speculation continues to mount that former world champion Jacques Villeneuve is planning to move to NASCAR as well. Other former F1 drivers have gone back down the totem-poll to sports-car racing, endurance racing, Indy cars, and touring cars, but Jacques indicated his intentions by asserting that NASCAR was not, in his bespectacled eyes, a step down from F1.

The latest reports claim that the French Canadian son of legendary Ferrari driver Gilles Villeneuve has already signed a contract with Roush Racing. Roush drivers won the Nextel Cup in 2003 and 2004, and the team is considered to be Ford”s leading NASCAR challengers. In addition to the five cars run in the top-tier Nextel Cup, Roush also runs six cars in the lower Busch Series and two Craftsman trucks. While it”s not yet clear where the former Indy 500 winner would start (nor, for that matter, confirmed that he will), he”d be joining a winning team with the apparatus to give him the opportunity to win. After racing for Williams, BAR-Honda, Renault, Sauber and BMW, JV”s been given no shortage of opportunities to win in F1 - time will tell if his fortunes will turn for the better in NASCAR.

Honda Civic Type-R sedan pacing Japanese F1 GP

Click to enlarge UPDATE: Press release, hi-res photo gallery added The “R” in Type-R stands for “racing,” so the deciders for Formula 1 thought it best to name the Civic Type-R Prototype as the official vehicle for this week”s Japan Grand Prix. The four-door prototype has been given the go ahead for production and will likely hit dealers in its home country in late 2007. The overall shape bears significant resemblance to the current Civic sold stateside, however a revised front and rear fascia give the JDM Civic a bit more flow, when compared to its angular sibling abroad. Motivation will come in the form of a 2-liter, inline-four, producing upwards of 220 HP and sending power through a six-speed manual. The race, to be held at the world-famous Suzuka Circuit in the Mie Prefecture, is the second to last race of the season and may prove to be one of the most entertaining races of the year. With a course rife with passing opportunities and the two leaders, Schumacher and Alonso, running neck-and-neck in points, we”ve already planned our Sunday around the race and even if you”re not into F1, this may be the race to see. In the Autoblog Garage: 2007 Audi Q7 4.2

I wasn”t home when the media fleet guys dropped off the svelte silver bullet they call the Audi Q7… but my roommate was. Like any car-crazy boy, he just couldn”t help himself. He grabbed the key fob and tore out to the driveway — it was playtime.

“This thing is STUPID with features,” his voice screamed into my earpiece when he called to tell me that the Audi had arrived. “I lifted the rear hatch and saw a button — when I pushed it, the ass dropped three inches. I thought low-riders were supposed to have switches in the cockpit.” There are switches in the cockpit, by the way, but we”ll get to that later when we discuss the Q7″s Adaptive Air Suspension. The ass-dropper in question is the technology”s cargo mode, which makes it easier to load and unload the cargo space of the vehicle.

Thankfully, my roomie heeded my warning that the Audi loan agreement specifically states that only the operator (yours truly) and the operator”s spouse can drive the vehicle, and he refrained from going on a joyride. He did suggest we get married, however, but then I would have to share.

Welcome to the key audience for the Audi Q7 — boys (and girls) who love their toys. There are seven — yes, seven — owner”s manual books for the vehicle”s various systems stuffed into the glovebox.

(continued)

Exterior

Like the Mercedes R-class, the Q7 credits coupe styling for its design inspiration, sporting a sweeping roofline and aggressive angles that betray the vehicle”s speed and agility. The design is a far cry in the right direction from the bulky, beastly outfits of most SUVs on the market, though the Q7″s massive and imposing grille and muscular stance leave enough of the Beast in Prince Charming”s demeanor for the vehicle to still claim its SUV designation.

The proportions of the Q7 elegantly blend function with style. The wheels are placed as close to the corners of the vehicle as possible, giving the SUV a low-slung look that also improves driving dynamics. The length of the vehicle gives the Audi a streamlined appearance while accommodating seven passengers and providing class-leading cargo space. Finally, a subtle rear spoiler provides both character to the rear end of the vehicle and hosts a third tail light.

Completing the package on our tester were 20-inch cast alloy five double-spoke wheels, which could officially be dubbed, well, “dubs” since their 20 inch diameter meets the definition exactly. While the upgrade from the standard 18-inchers may have altered handling slightly, the suspension and brakes are more than up to the challenge. The result is a more attractive and substantial look, particularly when said wheels are wrapped in 275/45 performance tires, as was the case with our Q7. The absence of run-flats is puzzling, but hopefully the tire pressure monitoring system and inflatable spare will alleviate any problems on that front.

Interior

The interior is the epitome of German thoughtfulness in usability, quality and design, making it no wonder that the vehicle snagged Ward”s “Interior of the Year” award earlier this year. Based on the A6″s interior, the Q7 features brilliant and beautiful jewel-like LED lighting in blue, red and white. The navigation screen is powerfully lit and sports the perfect resolution, whether the driver is changing stations on the Sirius Satellite Radio menu or engaging SquirrelVision (a.k.a. Rear Parktronic and rear view camera) to safely exit the driveway. Our favorite touches include the lights that illuminate the floor space of the vehicle, red illumination of the door handles for easier exit, and screens to cover windows during broad daylight.

The temperature controls are another plus. Via either the Multimedia Interface (MMI) or the temperature controls on the console itself, driver, passenger and each of two rear passengers can control their own climatic destiny. The modes go from fully automatic to fully manual, where users can dictate direction and amount of airflow, seat warmer intensity and overall temperature. Another benefit of newfangled technology like that of the Audi is that one doesn”t have to freeze his or her rear end off while defrosting the windshield — the defroster works independently of the rest of the climate controls.

Also of interest on the climate side of things is the Econ option, which allows the user the opportunity to set the climate controls in such a way that the vehicle prioritizes fuel efficiency over comfort.

The only drawback to the climate controls that we could glean was that, unlike much of the Q7″s competition, the seat warmers warm only the bottom, not the back — a fact that a friend and avid GMC Envoy enthusiast was all too quick to point out.

The cargo capabilities — both human and not — with the Q7 are astounding given how compact the vehicle feels while driving it. With the third row of seats folded down, we were able to fit everything from two 100 lb. dogs to three pumpkins, a bushel of apples, two bags of donuts and enough cider to wash them down happily. With the third row of seats set up for passengers, the space proves to be a little lacking, but then again, the occupants most likely to take advantage of the seating arrangements are kids with little legs who can maneuver easily into the tight space.

We did have one complaint about the interior aside from the seat warmers, and this one is of more interest to the ladies reading this write-up — it is downright impossible to maneuver gracefully in and out of the vehicle while elegantly dressed. We”re not sure if adding some retractable running boards or lowering the seats would have helped, but getting into the car requires a slinging movement that just doesn”t mix with dress clothes. Consider yourselves warned, girls.

Gadgetry

Various safety features pepper the list of technology available on the Q7, the coolest of which include the aforementioned rear back-up camera with accompanying warning dings clueing the driver in to how close she is to things behind the vehicle. Make sure to turn the volume down to appreciate this little perk, however, as the dings do not override the most excellent 14-speaker Bose sound system pumping out the optional Sirius satellite radio.

The blind-spot warning lights integrated into the side mirror assemblies were a welcome addition to the Q7″s list of toys as well. Called Side Assist by Audi, the vehicle has sensors that monitor the Q7″s blind spot for you, indicating when it is safe to change lanes and when it isn”t. The system monitors the speed of cars moving alongside the Q7, and when a vehicle poses a danger, LEDs light up — but not so bright that the driver is distracted by any means. The system”s range is 16.5 feet.

We were pleasantly surprised about how easy it was to use Audi”s Multi Media Interface (MMI) system, particularly with all of the backlash iDrive-like systems are receiving these days. Manipulating the system comes intuitively after just a few trips — scroll using the knob, push down to select, and use the peripheral buttons to change menus. The latter part of the process is best relegated to when the vehicle is at a stand-still, as that action requires some reading and spacial attention.

The GPS navigation system itself is also easy to use, and while some folks may disapprove, Audi lets the driver decide whether navigating and driving at the same time is a bad thing by allowing for the system”s use while the vehicle is in motion. While the MMI boots up with the obligatory warning label about how dangerous it is to navigate and drive, further examination shows that the system offers up large print that most drivers will be able to read, say, while tooling down the highway at 85 mph. Not that we”d recommend that, of course. An important feature of the navigation and one that is becoming increasingly popular with navigation systems is the concierge function, which labels the map with icons designating ATMs, hotels, restaurants and gas stations close by.

The Audi is also blessed with Active Cruise Control, which adapts the speed of the Q7 to the vehicle in front to minimize the annoying process of trying to sync up cruise control settings. Other technology offered up on the vehicle include voice-activated phone and navigation, dynamic cornering headlights, intelligent wipers and accident prevention (emergency braking whether you like it or not!).

Performance

If we were to choose one thing that is the most striking about the Audi Q7, its that it handles much more like a sports car than its size and weight would suggest. In fact, we would liken it to the linebacker taking ballet class — and doing a damn fine job at it. Weighing in at a massive 5,500 lbs., the vehicle”s agility is surprising despite some understeer. While sticky tires certainly go a long ways, we chalk the handling up to the suspension system, biting brakes and Audi”s quattro all-wheel drive system.

Speaking of the suspension system, the Adaptive Air Suspension is truly an experience. Originally engineered for the 2004 Audi A8, the principle behind the system is to keep driving dynamics high and ride comfort at its peak — two characteristics that automakers and suppliers building traditional suspension systems must tinker with to find a “happy medium.”

The system is electronically-controlled with sensors on all four wheels linking into a central control system. For smooth roads at high speeds, the car is lowered and suspension stiffened for stability, comfort and fuel-friendly aerodynamics. For bumpy roads like those you”ll find along the service drive of almost any highway around Detroit, the vehicle is given more ground clearance and softer damper settings. For these and any other situation, the sensors pick up on rate of acceleration, vertical wheel movements, braking, steering wheel position and turning angle and adjust accordingly to alleviate vehicle roll.

Based on our test cruising, the system is fantastic. Whether we were taking an exit ramp much too fast or bumping along an unpaved road on the way to the cider mill, we stayed comfortable and in control while still maintaining the fun-factor provided by a good, stiff suspension. There is also the coolness factor inherent in looking back at the vehicle after exiting to see it lower hydraulically back into place.

We will, however, quibble about the Tiptronic function. Like most manumatic transmission options, we can really take or leave the Tiptronic, quite frankly. The lag between gears is too long to do anybody any good, and the full automatic is responsive enough that the manumatic is really just a toy for drivers who feel the need to shift something.

The Electronic Stability Program, however, is a nice performance perk. The juice in the 4.2L V8 is enough to get the tires spinning to the glee of almost every driver, ESP on or off. With safety being a big part of what the Q7 is about, however, it”s nice to know that Audi is there for us. On one dark and stormy night, we piloted the Q7 along a deserted stretch of I-96 that was apparently prone to slight flooding, and when the vehicle started hydroplaning, the ESP warning lights flashed and we had the distinct and very welcome feeling that the vehicle was stabilizing itself.

All in all, the Audi Q7 did a great job of winning us over. In fact, the only significant difference between this ride and the Porsche Cayenne is the sheet metal it”s wrapped in, the optional 4.5L turbocharged V8 in the Porsche, and $40-50K. The gadgetry, design, handling and interior quality are all comparable enough that we”d spring for the $63,770 4.2L V8 we tested (which comes standard with all-wheel drive, by the way) and use the leftover change on an A3, if we had our choice.

Looking backward, moving forward: reviving Borgward

The resurrection of buried car brands has become a very fashionable business these days, especially with German companies. BMW has obviously found success with the new MINI; Mercedes-Benz a little less so with the eccentric Maybach; while the VW Group brought back Bugatti like a phoenix from the ashes. These cases all revolved around major German manufacturers buying and resuscitating a brand, but now Christian Borgward is maneuvering to revive his grandfather”s car company that bears their family name.

Borgward made cars from 1924 through 1961, when the company went bankrupt. Following Carl Borgward”s death in 1963, the tooling was sold to a factory in Mexico that continued building the cars until 1970.

Unlike other revival marques, Borgward is not out to create a media storm. What is known is that the brand is planning to make its comeback from Bremen, Germany, with investment from venture capital firms, an initial two-car line-up aimed in between the Ford Mondeo and BMW 3-Series (two of the biggest sellers in the UK) and an ambitious sales target of 10,000 per year. Manufacturing will probably be contracted to Magna, who build the BMW X3 and contributed to the upcoming Fiat Bravo, although Italian design houses like Bertone and Pininfarina (which also have limited production capabilities) may be thrown into the mix.

Given the historical roots on which the company will be trading and the current popularity of retro styling, we can expect the design to go that route. It will likely be some time before the new Borgwards are on the road, but we”ll stay tuned for what could be an interesting alternative to the usual driveway fodder.

Spawn of eK: New Nissan Otti released in Japan

Nissan Otti Rider Autech Nissan Otti Rider Prior to the release of the latest Mitsubishi eK Wagon, an announcement was made that Mitsu would be supplying Nissan with their own version of the new kei car. No surprise, really, as the previous-gen eK was also sold as the Nissan Otti. Well, the day we all knew was coming has arrived, as Nissan unveils their new Otti minicar. Everything — the power sliding passenger-side door, the engines, specifications, SU-LEV rating (for the non-turbo) etc. — corresponds exactly to the new Mitsu. Even the wheels and/or wheel covers are identical. This is as straight a rebadge as you”ll ever see. The Otti S/E/M trims are the Nissanized eK Wagon, while the Otti RS/RX trims are the doppelgangers of the eK Sport. Nissan does offer the new Otti with the Japan-market “Rider” package by it”s in-house customizer, Autech. It adds elements like aftermarket grilles and wheels that freshen the look and actually set it apart somewhat from its Mitsubishi clone. It”s not all fun and games with Autech. They also make an Otti LV “Life Care Vehicle” that offers easier access for the disabled. Nissan hopes to sell 2,600 Ottis a month, a number they”ll probably exceed in a week or so when you consider that Mitsubishi hit its 6,000/month eK target in the first two weeks it was offered. Ditto Subaru with the Stella and Daihatsu with the Sonica. The Japanese loooove their kei cars and order “em in bunches when they”re new to market. If you didn”t like the eK, you won”t like this car. If you like the eK, well, you”re not going to find much to dislike here. More info”s available in the press release after the jump and at the car”s official site, where the “Otti Song” that launches automatically will, without question, make you insane. Neat and easy-to-clean interior The Otti”s interior has been thoughtfully designed to express its dynamic driving style, for example, the instrument cluster is uniquely positioned at the center stack. In the sporty RS/RX model, the instrument cluster features a combination of a digital speedometer and analog tachometer. The center stack”s contemporary yet minimalist design features pearl white trim in the S/E series and sporty silver trim in the RS/RX series. For greater ease on the move, the automatic shifter is mounted on the left on the dashboard within immediate reach of the driver. The various interior storage ideas allow for a neat and easy-to-clean cabin, including a detachable box, an instrument-panel cubby, multi-purpose clips on both doors and rear-seat cupholders. There are two interior-color options to meet different customer tastes — beige and black (S/E/M) and all-black (RS/RX and E/S 3AT, Black Interior Package). Its innovative design extends to the different seat configuration and flexibility for added functionality. Front seats recline flat, and 50-50 split rear seats recline independently at the touch of a lever. The Otti”s unique “Inner Green” concept incorporates certain features such as an odor-free headliner and cabin air filters. Remote-controlled sliding doorfor exceptional convenience A remote-controlled sliding door on the passenger side allows for easier access in narrow spaces, and is equipped with safety interlock. The door opens 530mm wide and can either be controlled by a driver-seat switch, a remote control, a switch on the upper B-pillar or the door handle itself. Safety and environmental performance Standard features include antilock brake system, pre-tensioning seat belts with two-stage load-limiters, SRS airbag systems, front-bumper design enhancements to minimize pedestrian injury, and body-frame structural reinforcement to protect driver and occupants in the event of a collision. The Otti is part of a new generation of minicars that are more environmentally friendly — a criteria of increasing relevance to a growing segment of Japanese consumers that are demanding sustainable mobility solutions. Models with non-turbo 3G83 engine are certified super-ultra-low emission vehicles (SU-LEVs) as they emit 75% less greenhouse gases below Japan”s 2005 exhaust emission standards. Models with the inter-cooled turbo 3G83 engine are Ultra Low Emission Vehicles, complying with the government”s 2005 standard of reducing emissions by 50%. The 5MT models with the 3G83 engine have surpassed the 2010 fuel-efficiency standard plus 10%, and are eligible for the 2006 Green Tax reduction.

2009 VW Sportvan: not your hippie father’s microbus

Volkswagen is working on a crossover family-hauler to take on the Mercedes R-Class and Ford”s European-market S-Max sporty minivan called the Sportvan, which the German company plans for 2009. VWs and Audis often share platforms on account of their corporate connection, so with the Passat too small and the Phaeton too big (and expensive), Wolfsburg looked to Ingolstadt and swiped the mechanicals from the A6, which is being replaced in 2010.

Unlike the R-Class and S-Max, the Sportvan is expected to offer plenty of space, but only to five passengers with two rows of seating. Look for a range engines to include turbo fours, a V6 and a few diesel alternatives when the car goes on sale in Europe, to be offered with all-wheel-drive and the possible availability of the DSG dual-clutch transmission.

VIDEO: “Ken and Mary’s Skyline”

> /> />> We don”t know what we like most about this commercial. Is it the extremely spiffy metallic blue “72ish C110 Skyline GT? Is it the super-70s, ultra-mellow J-pop soundtrack? Or maybe it”s that we find Ken & Mary to be just as irresistable today as the Japanese public apparently did in the 70s, when the commercial was a hit and the car was a big seller. What is that they”re doing on the beach, anyway? Carving wood? You decide. Whatever the strategy behind it was, the “Ken & Mary” ad worked. We so want to go buy a 1970 Nissan Skyline now. Report: GM and Renault/Nissan end talks

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that talks between General Motors and Renault/Nissan have ended. The news comes from an unnamed person familiar with the situation, which could be the guy that fills the water glasses on the conference table, and Renault so far is refusing to comment. We do know that the board of General Motors met yesterday, presumably to discuss what had been learned from 90 days of exploratory talks held behind closed doors between GM and Renault/Nissan. The domestic giant, however, made no statements following the board meeting and is so far mum on the WSJ report, as well. The WSJ”s source says that the chief executives of both companies, one Mr. Rick Wagoner and one Mr. Carlos Ghosn, terminated the talks themselves. Thus, if this report is true, then any possibility of an alliance forming between General Motors and Renault/Nissan is gone. Word has it that Mr. Ghosn stopped for a Coney”s chili dog in Dearborn on his way out of town, though. Hmmm… (We”re kidding, we know for a fact chili gives Carlos gas.)
