Just in case you haven”t seen enough of the Paris Motor Show (and I know you haven”t), then scoot on over to AutoblogGreen for a few posts on the greener side of things. The Autoblog team on the convention floor sent us images and details of new electric and hybrid vehicles. Cool stuff. Some of the concepts on display included an EV that charges from either the solar panels, a little windmill or an outlet, the Honda Civic Hybrid Sports, and the odd-looking AstroLab.

No iDrive for the MINI and there was much rejoicing

Mr. Paukert, our compatriot at Winding Road, was able to abduct a few BMW execs in Paris and beat them with stale baguettes until they finally put to rest rumors of an iDrive-like interface finding its way into the new MINI. Since a touch screen setup was nixed due to design and placement issues, the joystick you see south of the shifter is there to control all facets of the new MINI”s sat-nav. Furthermore, the crumb-encrusted execs made it clear that no aspect of iDrive”s architecture will find its way into the iconic hatch, citing MINI owner”s affection towards a (somewhat) simple, uncluttered motoring experience.

Texas writers design Ford F-150 Project FX2 Sport

F-150 Project FX2 sport truck The really big news for Ford this past week was the new 2008 F-Series Super Duty, which was unveiled by Mark Fields at the Texas State Fair. If serious work trucks aren”t quite your thing, though, Ford”s got one with a little more mass appeal on the way, based on its new FX2 sport truck.. The automaker quietly introduced the new F-150 FX2 in April at the NY Auto Show, and while the Shelby GT-H got all the all the Big Apple fanfare, Fields did briefly single out the the new sport truck in his presentation to the media at the Javits Center. A few weeks later, Ford isssued an official press release announcing the new model”s availability. Fast forward a few months. Six members of the Texas Auto Writers Association sat down for lunch with a group of people from Ford who wanted the writers” take on what they”d do to make the new FX2 better. Their mission? Go through the catalog of available factory accessories and Ford Racing parts and choose the equipment they”d like to see on one of the new FX2s. The list the scribes came up with was long and distinguished, and included (among other things) a Ford Racing intercooled supercharger, 4-pot Brembos, a lowering kit, a Harley-Davidson-edition front end, a silver racing stripe, SVT wheels, and a side-exit exhaust. Inside, the truck received pillar-mounted gauges, Harley-Davidson-model pedals, Bluettoth, and rear-seat DVD. The completed machine, dubbed the F-150 Project FX2 Sport, was revealed to the media at the Texas State Fair on September 29 and will be shown publicly at SEMA beginnig October 31. It has a low, muscular stance compared to the stock FX2 (no slouch in the looks department itself, as trucks go). The estimated cost of all the added goodies, according to Dallas Morning News writer Terry Box, is estimated to be between $17,000 and $20,000, putting the Project FX2 into Roush and Saleen territory in terms of pricing. To be fair, it offers similar levels of style and performance. In the absence of a new, full-blown SVT Lightning, a decked-out hot rod FX2 like the project vehicle may be the sweetest factory sport truck you can get from a Ford dealer. If you”re willing to part with the dough, that is. (Photos, press release after the jump) [Sources: Dallas Morning News, Ford] PRESS RELEASE: Texas auto writers help Ford build ultimate sport truck Project FX2 Sport, the ultimate factory custom truck, will make its public debut at the Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association show in Las Vegas, Nev., Oct. 31 through Nov. 3, 2006. It”s a known fact that pickup truck owners are rabid when it comes to personalizing their vehicles. Research has shown that more than 70 percent of new truck owners spend, on average, nearly $1,500 on aftermarket accessories in the first year of ownership. Ford already offers America”s best-selling truck thanks to the widest, most diverse lineup that includes more than one million F-150 factory variations - such as Harley-Davidson[TM], FX4 off-road, FX2 Sport street and upscale King Ranch models - to feed the growing demand for personal customization. Ford also offers a host of Genuine Ford Accessories and Ford Racing Performance Parts (FRPP) specifically designed to help truckers personalize the appeal and boost the performance of their trucks. The new project F-150 - a 2007 FX2 Sport with performance, appearance and in-vehicle entertainment and telematics modifications - takes the concept in a new direction by allowing customers to build trucks to their own specifications with dealer-installed Ford parts and accessories. “The new F-150 FX2 Sport is another example of how Ford is expanding its truck leadership by listening to our customers and delivering bold, American products,” says Christine Feuell, director, Ford Vehicle Personalization. “The new FX2 Sport builds on the F-150 FX4 off-road model by offering custom performance looks - inside and out - in a more affordable two-wheel-drive model. “The new project F-150 FX2 Sport performance truck demonstrates how customers can further personalize their pickups using Ford Racing Performance Parts and Genuine Ford Accessories.” The honor of further personalizing the project F-150 FX2 Sport went to a small contingent of members of the Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA). The TAWA team was influential in choosing the appropriate powertrain, interior and body parts and pieces, bringing them together to build their ultimate F-150 sport truck. Terry Box, auto writer for the Dallas Morning News was one of the “builders” and has had a chance to get behind the wheels of the truck he helped bring to life. “My main input I pushed hard for was more power,” says Box. “The super charger was a magical edition. The truck is really responsive yet it”s civilized.” Box sees a big market for this kind of offering in Texas. “There are a lot of guys down here who are very much into modifying hot rod pickups.” Project F-150 FX2 Sport, started life as a 2007 F-150 SuperCab FX2 Sport, with its dark-accent billet-style grille insert and body-color grille surround and unique captain”s chairs with center console and floor-mounted shifter. “Truck owners spend more per vehicle on accessories than anyone else,” says Mark Joseph Birnhart, Ford Vehicle Personalization truck marketing manager. “We make sure our Ford accessories match our Built Ford Tough truck engineering philosophy so they are required to pass all of Ford”s quality, durability and safety testing standards. We also stand behind our products with Ford”s new, extended manufacturer”s warranty, which is the best warranty and roadside assistance package of any new full-size pickup.” High-tech touches include a Mobile-ease[TM] Hands Free, Bluetooth[TM]-equipped wireless phone system and Headrest Rear Seat DVD Entertainment System. A Harley-Davidson pedal package and A-pillar gauge pod help dress out the interior. The suspension was lowered two inches in front and five inches in the rear and combine with the prototype 20 by 10-inch Sport wheels to give the truck its aggressive stance. A custom stripe package has been added for that extra personal touch. The 6.5-ft. bed features a lockable, hard tonneau cover and is carpeted with a Sport Liner bedliner. The marine-style easy-to-clean polyester surface molds to the contour of the bed and will not stain, absorb moisture or mildew. The truck”s 5.4-liter V-8 receives a FRPP, premium, polished, Whipple, screw-type supercharger and a pair of ceramic-coated headers feeding FRPP side exhausts with Ford Racing embossed tips. “The engine modifications boost horsepower by well over 425 at the rear wheels and torque to well over 500 ft.-lbs,” says Andy Slankard, Ford Racing engineering supervisor. “Best of all, it”s been calibrated by Ford Racing engineers and is 50-state legal.” The 5-speed automatic transmission has been recalibrated to handle the increase in horsepower. A 4:10 rear gear and “True Trac” limited-slip rear differential put the power to the ground. Prototype, Brembo four-piston brakes up front, along with stock rears, provide the stopping power. “The most important part about this project F-150 is that any enthusiast could build it with parts from the Ford Racing and Genuine Ford Accessories catalogs,” says Jamie Allison, Ford Racing Performance Group manager. Ford Racing of parts are available for ordering at www.fordracingparts.com. The Project F-150 FX2 Sport will make its media debut on September 28, 2006 at the State Fair of Texas. The first public showing with be at the Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association show in Las Vegas, Nev., Oct. 31 through Nov. 3, 2006.

TRD Special Edition FJ Cruiser package, Camry hybrid gets $300 bump

Since Toyota didn”t have an image available, the above image is our lame attempt at photochopping the exterior. In 2007, Toyota will be bringing to market a Limited Edition model of its popular FJ Cruiser, complete will all the Toyota Racing Development (TRD) goodies. First off, the limited edition version will be sprayed down head-to-toe, in black paint, nixing its trademarked white roof. The wheels will be coated in an anthracite finish and wrapped with uprated BF Goodrich All-Terrain rubber. To complete the exclusive look, expect the prerequisite “TRD Limited Edition” badges adorning as many surfaces as possible. Appearance is one thing, capability is another and TRD recognizes that the base model could benefit from a few staple mods to make it a more competent off-roader. The stock suspension will be tossed and fitted with TRD/Bilstein shocks, developed for dirt duty and covered in a red finish. The new shocks are claimed to reduce squat and dive, as well as increase straight-line stability. Another mod includes mating the locking diff with the Active Control computer, which will aid the FJ when rock crawling is the activity du jour. The package will also include a TRD performance exhaust and “rock rails.” The interior will benefit with an array of airbags, including both seat-mounted and side curtain, along with a “multi-informational display” that comes equipped with a temp. gauge, compass and inclinometer. A total of 3,200 vehicles will be made, with a $7,265 increase in MSRP on manual models and a $7,250 increase on automatic models. The $15 premium on the manual-equipped FJ is purportedly due to the “quick shifter” option. If you want to see the new FJ in person, it”ll be prominently displayed during this year”s SEMA show in November. In the following press release, Toyota also snuck in a $300 increase on its Camry Hybrid, effective October 30th. PRESS RELEASE Sep 29, 2006 12:00 America/Los_Angeles Toyota Announces Pricing for Toyota Racing Development Special Edition FJ Cruiser Package and 2007 Camry Hybrid TORRANCE, Calif., Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ — Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today announced manufacturer”s suggested retail prices (MSRP) for the Toyota Racing Development (TRD) Special Edition package for the 2007 FJ Cruiser sport utility vehicle (SUV) and 2007 Camry Hybrid. The TRD Special Edition package adds several exterior performance enhancements to the 2007 FJ Cruiser SUV. Included in the package are TRD/Bilstein off-road tuned, red painted shock absorbers. The special shocks are designed to enhance straight line stability, decrease brake “dive” and acceleration “squat” yaw response, stability and roll feel, body motion characteristics, shock impact and off-road handling. The seamless monotube design provides superior tube strength while maximizing heat dissipation and shock life. Additionally, TRD has synchronized the locking differential with Active Traction control. The locking rear differential no longer overrides Active Traction control enabling the FJ Cruiser to navigate easier through boulders. Unique exterior enhancements include an all Black paint scheme with a Black roof and “TRD Special Edition” badges. The Special Edition package will also feature a set of five TRD 16-inch alloy wheels with a gun metal gray painted finish and BF Goodrich All-Terrain tires with wheel locks, TRD performance exhaust and rock rails. Inside, the Special Edition package is equipped with seat-mounted side airbags and front and rear side curtain airbags, and a multi-informational display which includes compass, inclinometer and temperature gauge. The Special Edition package also includes a two-in-one AM/FM audio and six-disc CD changer, quickshifter (manual transmission models only) and all-weather front and rear cargo floor mats with a TRD logo. Only 3,200 units of the TRD Special Edition FJ Cruiser will be built. The Special Edition package will carry a base MSRP of $7,265 on manual transmission models and $7,250 for models with an automatic transmission. The base MSRP for the FJ Cruiser four-wheel drive models start at $23,090 for the manual transmission and $23,500 for an automatic transmission. The TRD Special Edition FJ Cruiser will arrive at Toyota dealerships in early November, and will also be on display at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in November. The 2007 Camry Hybrid receives an increase of $300, or 1.2 percent. Camry Hybrid pricing is effective with vehicles produced on or after November 1, 2006 for U.S. production or vessel arrivals on or after October 30, 2006. The Camry Hybrid will carry a base MSRP of $26,200.

Subaru’s diesel boxer

The design of the horizontally-opposed engine has a myriad of benefits. One of the most common is its compact design, which allows the center of gravity to be lower in the host vehicle. Additionally, since the boxer”s pistons cancel out much of the vibration, the rotational balance is second to none. Both of these advantages will lend themselves to the advent of the first boxer diesel, which will find a home within a variety of Subaru models in Europe and possible even here in the States. Hiroyuki Ikeda, Subaru Europe”s President, announced at the Paris Motor Show that the development of the H4 turbo-diesel boxer is almost complete. The design, pictured above, reveals two interesting tidbits: first, the turbo, which is traditionally housed towards the passenger side firewall on most Subarus, will be moved south of the crankshaft to retain the boxer”s low center of gravity. Second, the new DOHC diesel will be outfitted with a timing chain, currently only seen on Subaru”s H6 engines, and will be the first H4 so equipped. If one of Subie”s diesels does make it to this continent, expect it to reside under the hood of the new Forester. [Source: GizMag via Straightline]

Introducing Mr. October: GM’s monthly offerings

Never thought we”d see the day when Bob Lutz was dubbed “Mr. October,” but our eyes do not deceive us. General Motors has available for download a pinup calendar of sorts over at Flickr featuring the product boss with a GM Sequel for the month of October. In addition to the photo, the calendar features important dates from GM”s past, present and future.

The calendar”s entries evoke both sweet and bitter memories, depending upon your sensibilities. For example, on October 1, 1908, Buick became part of the GM family. On October 5, 1998, the calendar reminds us that current chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner was elevated to president of the company. It also provides a heads up for future events of notice, including the opening of the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney on October 26.

Future months have yet to be uploaded, but it is an interesting way of getting folks over to the GM Fastlane Blog photostream at Flickr, where photos of loving fans of GM vehicles abound.

Audi’s Neckarsulm plant celebrates 100 yrs, will build R8

This week, Audi staged a gala event at its Neckarsulm plant to celebrate the facility”s centenary. The dignitary-laden event featured a trip down memory lane in which key vehicles produced at the site over its history were displayed, each representing a particular benchmark over the 100-year history. The culmination of the event featured two new R8s being driven on stage to signify the sports car”s production kickoff at Neckarsulm. To prepare the facility for this new task, €28,000,000 has been invested to ready the R8 production line, where 250 employees will be dedicated to the car”s manufacture. The R8 will find itself in good company at Neckarsulm, as that facility also builds the A6 Allroad, S6 sedan and wagon, and S8 super sedan. Check out a photo gallery of the R8 manufacturing line after the jump. Related Posts: (Photos, press release after the jump) [Source: Audi AG] PRESS RELEASE: Highlight of the Neckarsulm centenary celebrations German premiere of the Audi R8 * State premier Günther Oettinger and Audi Board Chairman Martin Winterkorn give green light for new Audi sports car * Commitment to production location Germany Audi is marking “100 Years of Automotive Engineering in Neckarsulm” by officially putting its new R8 sports car into production. At a ceremony held at the Neckarsulm plant in the state of Baden-Württemberg, Chairman of the Board of AUDI AG, Prof. Martin Winterkorn, was joined by state premier Günther Oettinger to launch production of this new range-topping model, which is to be built in Neckarsulm under the supervision of quattro GmbH. “During its 100 years of existence, the Audi site in Neckarsulm has evolved into a mainstay of innovation, economic dynamism, prosperity and employment in Baden-Württemberg,” remarked state premier Günther Oettinger during the ceremony, adding, “I would like to thank Audi for the major presence it maintains in Baden-Württemberg and especially for the exemplary approach it takes to training young people and the vital contribution it makes as a result to safeguarding the future of our youngsters.” A century after the first “original Neckarsulm motor car” left the production halls there, Audi is in Neckarsulm to celebrate the German premiere of its new sports car and extend the long series of top-class automotive products that have originated in Baden-Württemberg. “We are giving the go-ahead for the production of a sensational car that opens a new chapter in our company”s history,” emphasised Audi Board Chairman Prof. Martin Winterkorn in Neckarsulm. The R8 is a thoroughbred mid-engined sports car with an aluminium body, which is due to arrive on the market in mid-2007. “This vehicle adds a new flagship model at the top our range and further advances the position of our brand,” commented Prof. Winterkorn. The R8 had received its world premiere just three days previously at the Paris Motor Show. “The production of the Audi R8 here at the Neckarsulm plant is, in my view, testimony to the fact that skill and dedication reap their own rewards, as these very qualities are evident in abundance amongst our workforce,” said the chairman of the Neckarsulm works council, Norbert Rank, at the centenary event. Over 1,000 guests, including many VIPs from the worlds of politics, business and high society, media representatives, members of the Audi Board of Management and Supervisory Board as well as executives past and present, gathered in a logistics hall that had been converted into an event arena, where they were taken on a dramatic journey through time from the beginnings of mobility through to today”s high-tech manufacture. The plant staged an open day to mark the centenary anniversary and visitors were able to follow proceedings on a number of giant outdoor screens. The journey through the plant”s past opened with an NSU 6/30 PS Saloon from 1928. On the race track, the Neckarsulm engineers emulated their motorcycle racing successes. The 1925 German Grand Prix, for instance, was won by the NSU 6/60 PS supercharged racing car. An NSU 1300 TT built in 1970 and an NSU Racing Spider from 1967 represented many more racing triumphs. The NSU Wankel-engined Spider (1964) that was exhibited on the stage epitomised the courage and pioneering spirit of Neckarsulm”s automotive experts. It was the first vehicle in the world to be fitted with a series-manufactured engine of this type whose pistons moved in a rotary instead of a lifting motion. This innovation placed the Neckarsulm design engineers at the very forefront of engine development. An NSU Ro 80 from 1976 illustrated how vehicles from this era also distinguished themselves with a sophisticated and timeless design. It was also at this time that the precept “Vorsprung durch Technik”, which continues to guide the company today, was devised. In 1977, production of the NSU models had to be halted due to economic constraints. But prospects brightened again as soon as 1980, after the “quattro” permanent four-wheel drive developed by Audi NSU in Ingolstadt - showcased at the ceremony by an Audi 100 Coupé - caused such a sensation. The Audi 100, which later evolved into the Audi A6, became the bread-and-butter car for the plant. Some 60 percent of the workforce are involved in the production of this model and its derivatives (A6 Avant, S6 Saloon and Avant and the allroad quattro). Today, Audi is the global market leader in the premium C-segment, as it is known. Audi finally completed its ascension to the premium segment with the Audi 200 (C2, built in 1982). The real quantum leap came in 1994 however, when the company brought out the Audi A8, the first luxury car to feature a full-aluminium body and “quattro” four-wheel drive which was represented at the anniversary show by an A8 L 6.0 from 2002. The company continues to centre its vast expertise in the field of lightweight manufacture and aluminium technology at its Neckarsulm site today. An Audi A6 2.5 TDI demonstrated how Audi changed the face of motoring in 1989 with a revolutionary engine that gave diesel cars a new sporty, dynamic and economical image. Today, 54 percent of all Audi cars have a “TDI” engine under the bonnet. Neckarsulm is synonymous with automotive performance of the very highest calibre and is often dubbed Audi”s “racing centre” with very good reason. In 2006, AUDI AG expanded its already attractive portfolio with the addition of three new models built in Neckarsulm: the A6 allroad quattro and two high-performance saloons powered by ten-cylinder engines - the S6/S6 Avant as well as the leading sports star of the luxury class, the S8. The stage show culminated with the appearance of two Audi R8 cars with 420-bhp 4.2-litre eight-cylinder FSI engines which together signalled the dawn of a new era: the official start of sports car production at the Audi plant in Neckarsulm. The R8 is a thoroughbred sports car boasting the Audi Space Frame (ASF), a mid-engine concept and quattro permanent four-wheel drive. The Audi subsidiary quattro GmbH has invested around €28 million in manufacturing plant and structural measures in Neckarsulm to prepare for series production of the sports car that was unveiled at the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show as the “Le Mans quattro” study. 250 people will work in the final assembly section for the R8, where trademark Audi standards of precision and craftsmanship are the order of the day. Since 1906, over six million cars have been built in all at the Neckarsulm site. In 2005, a total of 241,070 A6, A8, RS 4 and allroad quattro models were built. The Audi Neckarsulm plant has a workforce of 13,260 employees, including nearly 800 apprentices, making it the largest employer in the Heilbronn-Franconia region.

Ferrari goes Dutch: engine deal with Spyker-MF1

Spyker-MF1 has struck a deal with Maranello to use Ferrari engines for the 2007 Formula 1 season. The team formerly known as Midland and before that as Jordan was recently purchased by a consortium lead by Spyker, the quirky Dutch exotic carmaker. Autoblog previously speculated on the likelihood of such a deal, as an Emirates crown corporation owns a stake in both companies.

The announcement comes out of Shanghai, where the Chinese Grand Prix weekend is currently underway. The heads of the Spyker team met last week at Ferrari headquarters to strike a deal, but until Saturday, there was still a possibility that they would stick with Cosworth engines for next season.

Ferrari is also expected to provide engines for one of the two Red Bull teams (either Red Bull Racing or Scuderia Toro Rosso), leaving the other to possibly use Cosworth engines or the Northampton, England-based firm could be forced out of F1 without a team to supply.

F1 Championship tied in Red China

A jubilant Michael Schumacher took the checkered flag at the Sinopec Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai today, ahead of a disappointed Fernando Alonso who came in second, with Renault teammate Giancarlo Fisichella rounding out the podium in third. The two points Schumacher scored over Alonso brought the driver”s championship to a tie.

Schumacher started the race in fifth place after a disappointing qualifying session for Ferrari, while the Renault drivers took the front row. Schumacher once again earned his title of “King of the Rain” as he overcame the wet conditions to drive on to his 91st career victory. The exciting race was full of passes, crashes, spins and early retirements as the wet track gradually dried over the course of the race before the rain started again five laps before the finish.

With two races left to go in the season, the championship is in a dead heat as a retiring Schumacher strives to secure his record eighth world title over reigning champ Alonso. This season has been shaping up as the most exciting in recent F1 history; don”t miss the final two rounds in Japan next week and Brazil on October 22.

Porsche unveils the 2007 RS Spyder

2007 Porsche RS Spyder Click to enlarge Porsche has unveiled the RS Spyder for the 2007 sports car racing season, and, as you might imagine, they”ve made some improvements. Customer teams will finally be able to take delivery of the LMP2-class racer, which has been raced exclusively by Team Penske in the American Le Mans Series this season. The Penske Spyders have enjoyed success, and on Saturday they locked up the ALMS LMP2 team and manufacturer”s championships with a a 1-2 finish in LMP2 (5-6 overall) at Petit Le Mans. From what Porsche is saying, the 2007 machine is going to be even better, and we”re already looking forward to the Porsche vs. Acura LMP2 matchups next season. The new Spyder gets chassis improvements, tweaked aerodynamics, an easier-to-maintain body, and better cooling. With its mandatory air restrictors in place, the RS Spyder”s 3.4L V8 churns out 504 horsepower at 10,300 rpm. That”s a 23-horse increase over Penske”s 2006 rides, and it should be more than enough to get the 1,709-lb car around the various sports car circuits as quickly as possible. The ALMS season still has a race to go, and we find ourselves counting down to Sebring… (Photos, press release after the jump) [Source: Porsche AG] PHOTO GALLERY Click any image to enlarge 2007 Porsche RS Spyder2007 Porsche RS Spyder 2007 Porsche RS Spyder2007 Porsche RS Spyder PRESS RELEASE: New Porsche RS Spyder for the 2007 Season >Stuttgart. Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is proudly presenting the new RS Spyder at the Paris Motor Show, the Mondial de l” Automobile, from 30 September - 15 October, where the car is making its first public appearance. Developed at Porsche”s R&D Centre in Weissach near Stuttgart, this racing car is an evolution of the sports prototype currently going all-out for the winner”s title in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) in the hands of the US Penske-Motorsports-Team. Next year the new RS Spyder is to be raced by various customer teams in a number of countries, thus making its international debut. Porsche has developed and built the open RS Spyder in accordance with the rules and regulations of the French Automobile Club de”l Ouest (A.C.O.) racing organisation under the designation “Le Mans Prototypes 2″. This means that this racing car may be entered, inter alia, in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS), the European Le Mans Series (LMS), and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Choosing the second-highest of four A.C.O. racing categories, Porsche is facing competition at the highest level of technology and at the same time limiting the cost of racing the car with a view to future entry of the RS Spyder by customers. Following thorough computer simulations and tests in the wind tunnel, the RS Spyder will feature an updated and upgraded chassis next season. Optimisation of the wing and rear diffuser serves not only to enhance the aerodynamic efficiency of the car, but also to improve the range of set-up options for different kinds of race tracks. At the same time the carbon-fibre body has been modified for an even higher standard of ease and convenience in service and maintenance. And last but not least, the thermodynamic qualities of the RS Spyder have been optimised inter alia by re-designing the air ducts leading into and out of the radiators. The 90o V8 racing engine developed by Porsche for long-distance events develops maximum output from 3.4 litres displacement and with the air volume restrictor required by the pertinent regulations of 503 bhp (370 kW) at 10300 rpm, an increase in output over the former model by 23 bhp. The weight of the car is also in line with the A.C.O. Regulations, with the new RS Spyder weighing in at exactly 775 kilos or 1709 lb. The sequential six-speed dog-shift gearbox with its three-plate carbon-fibre clutch is fitted in lengthwise and is integrated into the chassis as a load-bearing component. Gears are shifted directly from paddles on the steering wheel. Porsche has upgraded the gearbox for the forthcoming racing season above all with the objective to make the gearshift even more reliable, smoother and less demanding on all the components involved, and at the same time even more precise. This prototype sports car is based on a carbon-fibre monocoque chassis, with double wishbone track arms for the front wheels attached to the ultra-stiff and light body structure. The double wishbones at the rear, in turn, are fastened to a carbon-fibre element bolted on to the transmission housing. Torsion springs and pushrod-operated four-way gas pressure dampers, as well as bending-leaf anti-roll bars, round off the suspension of the RS Spyder modified for even faster and more precise handling in 2007. Great attention has also been given to the ongoing development of various other components of the car such as the central electrics, the hydraulic system, and the power steering. The brakes feature double master cylinders, variable brake force distribution and inner-vented carbon-fibre discs measuring 380 millimetres or 14.96″ in diameter on the front axle and 355 millimetres or 13.98″ at the rear. The racing tyres for this prototype come from Michelin as a Porsche”s partner included from the beginning in the development of the RS Spyder. Precisely when the new model is being presented for 2007, the current RS Spyder is on the finishing straight right now at the end of its first complete racing season. With two races in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS), the most significant US Sports Car Championship, still to come, the Penske-Motorsports-Team as Porsche”s partner in cooperation and exclusive customer is now looking directly at the Driver”s, Team and Manufacturer”s Championships with Porsche”s sports prototype. And apart from superior class wins in the Le Mans Prototype Class 2, this light and agile Porsche also scored a sensational one-two victory on the winding Mid-Ohio race track in May, beating LMP1 prototypes despite their extra power on account of the regulations set out to their advantage.
